Quick answer
July is monsoon month across most of India, so the best trips either go into the rain or get out of it. In India, pick Ladakh or Spiti Valley, which stay dry behind the Himalaya, or Kerala for monsoon Ayurveda and low hotel rates. Abroad, choose Bali for its driest month, Kenya for the start of the Great Migration, or Switzerland for peak summer.
Best places in India in July
13–27°C (Leh), dryLadakh
Leh sits in a rain shadow, so July is dry and sunny while the rest of north India gets the monsoon. It is the peak month for Leh flights and bikers on the Manali highway, so book stays in Nubra and at Pangong early.
10–25°C (Kaza), mostly drySpiti Valley
Spiti is also in the rain shadow, with green barley fields around Kaza and Chandratal at its bluest. The approach roads through Kinnaur and Lahaul both see monsoon landslides, so keep two buffer days.
8–18°C, frequent rainValley of Flowers, Uttarakhand
The bloom peaks from mid-July to mid-August, with blue poppies, primulas and hundreds of other species across the valley floor. It is a monsoon trek, so carry rain gear and check the Rishikesh–Joshimath highway before you leave.
23–29°C, heavy rainKerala
Monsoon is the traditional season for Ayurvedic treatment, and the backwaters and Munnar's tea estates are at their greenest. Hotel rates are among the lowest of the year.
17–24°C, very wetCoorg
Waterfalls such as Abbey and Iruppu are full, and plantation homestays are cheap. Heavy rain and leeches limit trekking, so plan it as a slow, misty break.
24–32°C, monsoon showersUdaipur
When the rains come, the lakes start filling and the Aravalli hills turn green, with sunset at Sajjangarh as the payoff. It is humid between showers, but lake-view hotel rates are well below winter levels.
24–29°C, heavy rainGoa
Swimming is unsafe and many beach shacks are shut, but the hinterland is green, the waterfalls on the Goa–Karnataka border are full, and five-star resorts offer some of their lowest rates of the year. It suits a resort-and-food weekend rather than a beach holiday.
26–32°C, humid, monsoon rainPuri, Odisha
The Rath Yatra usually falls in late June or July, when lakhs of devotees pull the chariots of Jagannath along Grand Road. Puri hotels and trains for the festival days book out months ahead.
Best places abroad in July
23–30°C, dryBali
July is Bali's driest, coolest month and the peak of the European holiday season, so rates climb. Book villas three to four months ahead, and base yourself in Ubud, Sidemen or Uluwatu rather than central Seminyak.
12–25°C, dryMasai Mara, Kenya
The Great Migration usually reaches the Masai Mara from July, with Mara River crossings building towards August. Riverside camps for late July go fast.
13–25°C, some thunderstormsSwitzerland
Every pass and cable car is running, lakes are warm, and high trails such as the one to the Oeschinensee are open. It is the most expensive month, so book Lucerne and Interlaken hotels early.
9–15°C, mild, showersIceland
July has nearly 20 hours of daylight, the highland roads to Landmannalaugar are open, and puffins nest on the sea cliffs. It is expensive, so a self-drive with pre-booked guesthouses keeps costs in check.
25–33°C, dry on the east coastSri Lanka's east coast
While the south-west monsoon hits Colombo and Galle, the east coast around Trincomalee, Pasikudah and Arugam Bay is dry with calm seas. Kandy's Esala Perahera usually starts in late July or August.
17–31°C (Tbilisi), mostly dryGeorgia
Kazbegi and Svaneti are at their best, with high trails open and wildflowers on the slopes. Tbilisi is hot at about 30°C, so spend more nights in the mountains.
18–29°C (Cairns), dryQueensland, Australia
It is winter in Sydney and Melbourne, but tropical Queensland is in its dry season, the best time for the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns. Fares from India are lower than in December and January.
12–22°C, mild, showersUnited Kingdom
Long summer days suit the Lake District, the Cotswolds and the Scottish Highlands, which are at their greenest. Apply for the UK visitor visa at least a month before travel, since summer is the busiest processing period.

Why is July the cheapest month to travel in India?
July is the quietest month of the year for Indian leisure travel. Schools reopen in late June or early July, there are no major long weekends, and the monsoon covers almost the whole country. Domestic fares are at their lowest, and resorts in Kerala, Goa, Coorg and Udaipur cut rates sharply. If you can travel without children, this is the time for a five-star stay at close to three-star prices.
The exception is the Himalayan rain shadow. Ladakh and Spiti are at their peak, and Leh flights and Nubra camps stay expensive. Book them six to eight weeks out; monsoon resorts can be booked a week or two ahead. Couples who married in the summer can find good off-season deals in the Maldives and Mauritius through our honeymoon tour packages.
Abroad, July is peak season in Europe, Bali and East Africa, so the off-season logic flips. See the best time to visit Kenya for how the migration moves month by month.
Where is the weather best in July?
Ladakh and Spiti are dry and warm by mountain standards; see things to do in Ladakh. Everywhere else in India, choose a place where rain improves the trip: the Valley of Flowers, Kerala's backwaters, Coorg's waterfalls or Udaipur's filling lakes. Abroad, Bali, Sri Lanka's east coast, northern Europe, Iceland and tropical Australia are dry.
Where should you avoid in July?
- Himachal and Uttarakhand hill roads: Recent monsoons have brought serious landslides and flash floods. Check road status daily and avoid long drives on the Kullu–Manali and Rishikesh–Badrinath highways after heavy rain.
- National parks: Ranthambore's core zones close from 1 July to 30 September, Corbett's Dhikala zone is shut, and Kaziranga is closed for the monsoon.
- Andaman Islands: Rough seas, cancelled ferries and few dive trips.
- Dubai and the Gulf: Highs around 42°C. Only for indoor attractions and hotel deals.
- Greece, Italy and Spain: Heatwaves above 40°C are increasingly common, and sites such as the Acropolis have closed in the afternoons during them.
- Hong Kong, the Philippines and southern Japan: Typhoon season has started.
