When is the best time to visit Australia?

Australia is the size of a continent, so the answer depends on where you are going. For the classic first trip of Sydney, Melbourne and the Great Barrier Reef, the best overlap is September to November (spring) and March to May (autumn). Sydney sits at 20–25°C, Melbourne is mild, and the reef off Cairns is outside its wettest months.

Seasons run opposite to India's: December to February is summer, June to August is winter.

North versus south

The tropical north (Cairns, Port Douglas, the Daintree) has a wet season from roughly November to April, with heavy rain, humidity, possible cyclones and box-jellyfish season, when swimming needs a stinger suit. Its dry season, May to October, is the best time for the reef. Uluru and the Red Centre are best from May to September; summer days there regularly cross 38°C.

The south (Sydney, Melbourne, the Great Ocean Road, Tasmania) is best from October to April. Winter here is mild by Indian hill-station standards, as Sydney rarely drops below 8°C, but Melbourne's grey, windy July days can disappoint.

What about Indian school holidays?

May to June works well. Vivid Sydney lights up the harbour from late May to mid-June, the reef enters its dry season, and fares are lower than in December. Pack a warm jacket for Sydney and Melbourne evenings.

December to January is peak: Christmas, the New Year's Eve fireworks over Sydney Harbour and the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. Expect the highest fares and hotel rates of the year, and beaches crowded with Australian summer-holiday families.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest time to fly to Australia from India?
February to March and August to early September usually have the lowest fares from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, as they fall outside Indian school holidays and the Australian summer. Late November to mid-January is the most expensive period. Booking two to three months ahead helps more than waiting for sales.
When is the best time to see the Great Barrier Reef?
June to October is the best period for the reef from Cairns or Port Douglas: dry weather, calmer seas and good visibility, with water around 23–26°C. From November to May it is hotter and wetter, and you need a stinger suit for swimming because of box jellyfish.
Is Australia cold in June and July?
Southern cities are cool rather than cold. Sydney averages highs of about 17°C and lows near 8–9°C; Melbourne is colder, around 14°C and 6°C. Northern Australia, including Cairns and Uluru by day, is warm and dry. Pack a jacket and layers for a mixed itinerary.
When is Vivid Sydney?
Vivid Sydney, the festival of light projections, music and talks around the harbour, usually runs for about three weeks from late May to mid-June. Exact dates are announced each year by the organisers. It overlaps with Indian summer holidays, so harbour-view hotels fill early.
Is Christmas a good time to visit Australia?
It is festive and warm, with beach weather in Sydney, the New Year's Eve fireworks and the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. It is also the most expensive and crowded season. Book flights four to five months ahead and expect minimum-stay rules at harbour-view hotels over New Year's Eve.
