Varanasi is not a comfortable destination and it is not meant to be. It is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and everything about it — the ghats, the cremations, the aarti, the lanes — operates on a logic that predates tourism entirely.

Why travellers choose Varanasi

The Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat each evening is among the most striking rituals you can witness anywhere, and a dawn boat ride the following morning is its quiet counterpart.

Kashi Vishwanath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, and the recently completed corridor has substantially improved access and the experience of darshan.

Sarnath, where the Buddha delivered his first sermon, is a short drive away, giving the trip both Hindu and Buddhist significance.

What not to miss in Varanasi

  • Ganga aarti, Dashashwamedh Ghat — The evening fire ritual, best watched from a boat on the river.
  • Dawn boat ride — The ghats waking up at first light — the defining Varanasi experience.
  • Kashi Vishwanath Temple — One of the twelve Jyotirlingas, with the modern corridor easing access.
  • Sarnath — The Dhamek Stupa and the deer park where the Buddha first taught.
  • Manikarnika and Harishchandra Ghats — The cremation ghats — approached with respect and no photography.
  • Banaras silk weaving — Workshop visits to see Banarasi brocade woven on handlooms.

When to travel

October to March is the comfortable window, with pleasant days and cool evenings. Dev Deepawali in November, when the ghats are lit with thousands of lamps, is extraordinary but extremely crowded and requires booking months ahead. April to June is very hot. The monsoon raises the river and can close some ghats entirely.

Entry and paperwork

No visa is needed for Indian citizens. Kashi Vishwanath has security restrictions with phones and bags not permitted inside, and lockers are available at the entrance. Photography is strictly prohibited at the cremation ghats, and we brief every traveller on this before arrival.

Planning a Varanasi trip with Elitech Travels

Every Varanasi itinerary on this page is a starting point rather than a fixed product. Extend a city, change the hotel category, add a private guide or merge two routes and we will re-cost the trip and send a revised plan. Because we publish no departure dates, your holiday is operated in the window that suits your leave — tell us roughly when you want to travel and we confirm availability and pricing for exactly those days.

Good to know

Varanasi — frequently asked questions

How many nights?
Two nights is enough for the aarti, a dawn boat ride, the temple and Sarnath. A third night allows a slower pace and a second morning on the river.
Is it suitable for children?
Older children usually find it fascinating. The cremation ghats need a conversation beforehand, and we plan routes to give you control over what your family encounters.
Can you arrange darshan at Kashi Vishwanath?
We arrange what the temple administration officially permits and advise on realistic waiting times, which vary considerably by day and season.
