• Zermatt and the Matterhorn — A car-free village beneath the most recognisable mountain in the Alps, with the Gornergrat railway.
• Rhine Falls — Europe's largest waterfall by volume, an easy half-day from Zurich.

When to travel

June to September gives the clearest mountain views, full cable-car operation and long daylight — this is the ideal window. May and October are quieter and cheaper but some high excursions run reduced schedules. December to March is the ski season, with snow-covered scenery that photographs superbly, though several summer passes are closed. April and November are the least rewarding months.

Entry and paperwork

Switzerland is in the Schengen area, so a Schengen visa is required and it also covers onward travel to France, Italy, Germany, Austria and the rest of the zone. Appointments in the peak March-to-June period fill quickly and applications should begin at least eight to ten weeks before travel.
