Quick answer
June to September is the best time to visit Switzerland. High passes are open, lake steamers run full timetables and Lucerne sees highs of 19–24°C. December to March suits snow and skiing. Early September is the sweet spot for thinner crowds. Avoid November and April, when many mountain lifts close for maintenance and the weather is grey.

When is the best time to visit Switzerland?
For most Indian travellers the answer is June to September. The high passes are open, the Jungfraujoch (3,454 m), Titlis and Gornergrat are above the clouds on clear days, lake steamers run full timetables and June gives you 15–16 hours of daylight. Lucerne sits at 22–24°C, but the Jungfraujoch can be below zero even in July, so carry a proper jacket.
The catch is crowds and price. June is the height of the Indian summer-holiday rush, and Interlaken and Lucerne hotels fill months ahead. If your dates are flexible, the first half of September gives you the same weather with noticeably thinner queues at the mountain stations.
Is Switzerland good in winter?
Yes, if snow is the point. December to March brings skiing in Zermatt, Grindelwald, Engelberg and St. Moritz, Christmas markets in December and carnivals in February. The big excursions — Jungfraujoch, Titlis, Gornergrat — run all year. Expect sunset around 4:45 pm in December and lake cruises on a reduced winter timetable.
Which months should you avoid?
November and April are the in-between months. Many mountain lifts close for two to six weeks of maintenance, skies are often grey, and valley snow turns to slush. Hotels are cheaper, which suits a cities-and-lakes trip, but these are poor months for a first visit built around the Alps.
Planning around Indian holidays
- May–June school holidays: book hotels by January and your VFS appointment early. Schengen slots in Delhi and Mumbai get scarce from March.
- Diwali: a late-October Diwali works well; a mid-November one lands in the lift-closure gap.
- Christmas–New Year: the most expensive week of the year in ski resorts.
Apply for your Swiss Schengen visa 6–10 weeks before travel. You can lodge the application up to six months ahead.
