Our verdict
Pick Switzerland if this is your big Alps trip and the budget allows: Jungfraujoch, Mt Titlis, scenic trains and plenty of Indian food, from about ₹1.3 lakh on land for 7 nights. Pick Austria for similar lake-and-mountain scenery — Hallstatt, Zell am See, Innsbruck — plus Vienna and Salzburg's palaces and music, for roughly 25–30% less on land.

Same Alps, different trip
Switzerland and Austria share the Alps, a border and plenty of scenery. Switzerland's mountains are higher and more dramatic, and its tourism is set up around Indian travellers. Austria gives you similar lake-and-valley landscapes plus two of Europe's great cultural cities, Vienna and Salzburg, at a lower price.
Cost
Switzerland is one of the most expensive countries in Europe. A 7-night land package covering Zurich, Lucerne, Interlaken and a summit excursion starts around ₹1.3 lakh per person, twin sharing, in 3★–4★ hotels, or roughly ₹1.9 lakh with return flights. Mountain excursions add up: Jungfraujoch alone costs roughly CHF 200–240 (₹22,000–26,400) return from Interlaken without a pass, and a simple lunch is CHF 25–35 (₹2,750–3,850). See Switzerland trip cost.
A comparable 7-night Austria trip — Vienna, Salzburg, Hallstatt, and Innsbruck or Zell am See — starts around ₹1 lakh on land, roughly ₹1.6 lakh with flights. Lunch is closer to EUR 15–25 (₹1,500–2,550), and cable cars such as the Kitzsteinhorn above Kaprun cost far less than Swiss equivalents.
Visa and flights
Both are in the Schengen area, so one Schengen visa (fee EUR 90, about ₹9,200, plus service charges) covers both. Apply to the country where you will spend the most nights. See the Switzerland visa guide and Austria visa guide. Swiss flies non-stop from Delhi and Mumbai to Zurich in about 9 hours. Vienna is usually one-stop, 10–13 hours, though you can fly into Zurich or Munich and travel on by train.
Where Switzerland wins
- Summits: Jungfraujoch at 3,454 m, Mt Titlis's rotating cable car and glacier, the Matterhorn from Zermatt.
- Trains: the Swiss Travel Pass covers trains, lake boats and city transport, including scenic lines like the Glacier Express and GoldenPass.
- Indian food: Interlaken, Lucerne and Zurich have many Indian restaurants, and hotels on the standard circuit understand vegetarian and Jain requests.
Where Austria wins
- Culture: Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna's opera and coffee houses, Mozart's Salzburg.
- Value: hotels, meals and cable cars cost noticeably less.
- Christmas markets from late November, among the best in Europe.
- Fewer tour groups: Austria's lakes are busy but rarely with the Indian group crowds of Interlaken in May–June. Hallstatt is the exception and gets very crowded at midday.
Vegetarian food in Austria is fine — Käsespätzle, dumplings, salads — but Indian restaurants are concentrated in Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck. More in things to do in Austria.
Seasons
Both are best from May to September for green valleys and open high passes, and from December to March for snow. Indian school holidays in May–June are peak time in Switzerland, so book hotels and Jungfraujoch slots early. See Switzerland month by month.
How to combine Switzerland and Austria
This is one of Europe's easiest pairings. Zurich to Innsbruck is about 3.5 hours by train, Innsbruck to Salzburg about 2, and Salzburg to Vienna about 2.5. A 10-night plan of 5 nights in Switzerland and 5 in Austria, flying into Zurich and home from Vienna, works well on a single Schengen visa.
