How to spend less without ruining the trip

  • Book Vienna–Salzburg Railjet tickets as soon as dates are fixed; advance fares can be a third of the walk-up price.
  • Base yourself in Salzburg and day-trip to Hallstatt instead of paying Hallstatt's high room rates.
  • Avoid the Salzburg Festival weeks (late July to August) unless you are attending; Salzburg rates jump.
  • Buy a 24- to 72-hour Vienna transport pass instead of using taxis.
  • Compare an open-jaw ticket into Vienna and out of Munich, about 1 hour 40 minutes by train from Salzburg.
  • Drink tap water; it comes from alpine springs and saves a family ₹300–400 a day.

How much does an Austria trip cost from India?

A 5-night Austria trip covering Vienna, Salzburg and Hallstatt costs about ₹95,000 per person on a budget and ₹1,35,000 at mid-range, including return economy flights, the Schengen visa and twin-sharing hotels. A luxury version with a palace hotel in Vienna and a private driver starts around ₹2,50,000.

Austria is cheaper than Switzerland and comparable to Germany. Hotels, trains and food cost less than in Zurich or Lucerne, and the alpine scenery overlaps more than people expect.

Flights from India

Most routes are one-stop: via Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi or Istanbul, or via Frankfurt or Munich on European airlines. Expect ₹40,000–78,000 return in economy depending on your city and season. Munich is about 1 hour 40 minutes by train from Salzburg, so flying into Vienna and out of Munich can save time.

Hotels

A mid-range 3–4 star double costs about €130–180 a night in Vienna and Salzburg, rising sharply during the Salzburg Festival and on Christmas-market weekends. Hallstatt has few hotels and they are expensive for what they are; staying in Salzburg and day-tripping is better value. Most towns add a small city tax per night.

Trains and transport

Trains are good value if booked early. Advance Railjet fares from Vienna to Salzburg can start under €20, against €50 or more on the day. In Vienna, a 72-hour transport pass costs far less than taxis. A car makes sense only for the Grossglockner road and lake villages.

Visa, insurance and TCS

The Schengen visa costs €90 plus service charges; budget ₹11,000–12,500 per adult, plus travel insurance with at least €30,000 medical cover. See the Austria visa guide. If you buy a package from an Indian operator, TCS is collected on the package value; you claim it back when you file your income tax return.

Item, per personTypical cost
Concert in Vienna₹4,000–9,000
Schönbrunn Grand Tour₹3,000–4,100
Hallstatt salt mine with funicular₹4,100–4,600
Sound of Music tour₹5,000–6,100
Coffee and cake₹800–1,200

Frequently asked questions

Is Austria cheaper than Switzerland?
Yes, noticeably. Mid-range hotels, meals and trains in Austria often cost 25–40% less than in Switzerland. A 5-night Austria trip starts around ₹1,35,000 at mid-range including flights, while a 7-night Swiss land package alone starts around ₹1.3 lakh. Austria's Alps offer similar lakes, glaciers and cable cars.
How much does an Austria trip cost for a family of four?
For two adults and two children sharing a family room, a mid-range 5-night trip costs roughly ₹4.5–5.5 lakh including flights, visas and sightseeing. Children get reduced fares on Austrian trains and discounted entry at most sights, and a family room keeps the hotel bill down.
What is the cheapest time to visit Austria?
March, early April and November are cheapest in Vienna and Salzburg, along with January outside the ski resorts. Late September and October give good weather at moderate prices. Expect the highest rates in July and August, during the Salzburg Festival and on December Christmas-market weekends.
Is the Vienna Pass worth it?
Only if you plan three or more paid palaces and museums a day on consecutive days. For a typical two-day Vienna visit with Schönbrunn, the Belvedere and one concert, buying individual timed tickets online usually costs less. Compare the pass price with your actual list before buying.
