How to spend less without ruining the trip

  • Stay in the 9th, 10th or 11th arrondissements near a Métro line rather than the 7th or 8th; you'll save 20–30% on rooms.
  • Buy a weekly Navigo Découverte pass if your trip runs Monday to Sunday; it also covers the RER to Versailles and the airport.
  • Eat a fixed-price lunch menu (formule) at a bistro — often €15–22 for two courses — and keep dinner light.
  • Many national museums, including the Louvre, are free for under-18s; check family discounts before buying adult tickets for children.
  • Claim the VAT refund (détaxe) if you spend over €100 in one shop on one day, and validate the form at the airport.
  • Refuse dynamic currency conversion at card machines and pay in euros.

How much does a France trip cost from India?

For a 6-night Paris-based trip, budget about ₹1.55 lakh per person at mid-range, twin sharing, including return flights, Schengen visa and insurance. A budget trip starts near ₹1.25 lakh; luxury runs from ₹3.2 lakh. Figures assume late-2026 rates and €1 = ₹102.

Where does the money go?

On a mid-range trip, roughly:

  • Flights: about 35%. Paris is one of the best-connected European cities from India, with non-stop Air France flights from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, which keeps fares competitive.
  • Hotels: 30–40%. A central 3★ double costs €150–230 a night; rooms are small by Indian standards.
  • Attractions: 10–15%. The Eiffel Tower summit is €36.70, and the Louvre rose to €32 for most non-EU visitors in January 2026.
  • Food and transport: the rest. Paris is easy to do cheaply on the Métro and bakery breakfasts.

Visa, insurance and TCS

A Schengen visa costs €90 (about ₹9,200) plus the visa centre's service charge. Insurance with at least €30,000 of medical cover is required for the application. Our France visa guide lists documents and appointment tips.

If you book a package through an Indian agent, TCS is collected on the overseas tour package at the rate in force when you pay. You can adjust it against your income tax or claim it as a refund — it shows in Form 26AS. Package invoices also list GST separately.

What about the Riviera?

Two nights in Nice adds roughly ₹30,000–40,000 per person at mid-range: a TGV or flight from Paris, a Nice hotel and buses to Èze and Monaco. Flying home from Nice can cost the same as from Paris, so price an open-jaw ticket.

When is France cheapest?

January, February and November have the lowest hotel rates, often 30–40% below June. May, June and the Christmas weeks are the most expensive. See the best time to visit France for the trade-offs.
