Quick answer

For a first trip to Paris, stay in Le Marais (3rd–4th) or the Latin Quarter and Saint-Germain (5th–6th): central, walkable and full of cafés. Choose the 7th for Eiffel Tower views and quiet streets, the 9th around Opéra for value and shopping, and the 8th for luxury. Budget travellers can look near Gare du Nord, with some caution at night.

Which area of Paris is best for a first visit?

Paris is divided into 20 numbered arrondissements spiralling out from the centre. For a first trip, stay in the 1st to 9th: you'll walk to most sights and be minutes from a Métro station. The two areas we suggest most often are Le Marais and the Latin Quarter–Saint-Germain — central, walkable, safe and full of places to eat.

By type of traveller

  • Honeymooners: the 7th, for a room with an Eiffel Tower view. Confirm the view category when booking; most rooms don't have one.
  • Families with parents: the 7th or the 15th for quiet streets, or the 9th for easy transport. Ask for a lift — many older hotels have tiny ones or none.
  • Shoppers: the 9th near Galeries Lafayette, or the 8th.
  • Budget: around Gare du Nord or Gare de l'Est, choosing a hotel on a well-lit main street.

What should Indian travellers know about Paris hotels?

  • Rooms are small. A standard double can be 12–15 square metres. Families of three or four should book connecting rooms or an apartment-hotel.
  • Air conditioning isn't standard in older buildings. If you travel from June to August, confirm it in writing.
  • Breakfast often costs €15–25 extra; a bakery nearby is cheaper.
  • City tax is charged per person per night and is often added at check-out.

Staying near a Métro line 1 or line 14 station makes getting around much faster.

Frequently asked questions

Which arrondissement is best to stay in Paris for first-timers?
Le Marais (3rd and 4th) or the Latin Quarter and Saint-Germain (5th and 6th). Both are central, walkable to Notre-Dame and the Louvre, safe at night and full of cafés and affordable restaurants. The 7th is better if an Eiffel Tower view matters more than nightlife.
Is it safe to stay near Gare du Nord?
It is generally fine by day and convenient for the airport, but the streets around the station are scruffy and have petty crime and drug activity at night. If you stay there, pick a hotel on a busy main road, avoid walking through the station late, and keep valuables zipped.
Do Paris hotels have air conditioning?
Not all of them. Many older and budget hotels lack AC, which matters during summer heatwaves of 35°C and more. Newer and 4★ hotels usually have it. If you travel between June and August, filter for air conditioning and confirm it with the hotel before booking.
