When is the best time to visit France?
April to June and September to October. Paris is mild, with highs of 16–23°C, the parks are green, and queues at the Eiffel Tower and Louvre are manageable if you've booked timed tickets. Late spring also brings long evenings — sunset after 9:30 pm in June — which means more sightseeing in a day.
July and August are warmer and busier. Paris heatwaves of 35°C and above have become more frequent, many older hotels have no air conditioning, and some neighbourhood restaurants close for the August holidays. The Riviera is at its busiest and most expensive in these two months.
Is Paris worth visiting in winter?
For a city-only trip, yes. December has Christmas lights and windows, lower hotel rates before the 20th and museums without the summer crowds. January and February are cold (3–9°C), grey and short on daylight, but they're the cheapest months for hotels. The Riviera stays mild in winter at around 13°C, though many beach clubs shut.
Timing a trip around Indian holidays
- May–June: the best weather, but VFS appointments in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru book out; apply 6–8 weeks ahead.
- Diwali (October–November): a good window for Paris, with autumn colour and lower prices.
- Christmas–New Year: festive and crowded; book hotels by September.
Which months should you avoid?
No month is a write-off for Paris, but August is the weakest value: hot, crowded with tourists, with some local places closed. For the Riviera, avoid November to February if you want beaches.
