Quick answer
The best time to visit Germany is May to September, when days are long, beer gardens and Rhine cruises are running and temperatures sit around 18–25°C. December is the other favourite, for the Christmas markets. Munich hotel rates roughly double during Oktoberfest (18 September–3 October 2027). For summer trips, book your Schengen visa appointment early, as slots in India fill fast.

When is the best time to visit Germany?
Go between May and September for long days, open beer gardens, Rhine cruises and comfortable sightseeing at 18–25°C. December is the strong second choice, for Christmas markets. The table uses Munich's long-term averages; Berlin and Frankfurt are similar, with slightly less summer rain.
Germany is in the Schengen area. You can apply up to six months before travel, and for May–August trips you should book a VFS slot as soon as your dates are firm, because appointments in Indian cities fill within days. See our Germany visa guide and the wider Schengen visa guide.
Month by month
Spring (March to May)
March is grey and cold. April is famously changeable, sunny one hour and sleeting the next. May is excellent: chestnut trees bloom in Munich's beer gardens and white asparagus (Spargel) season, a vegetarian treat, runs from April to late June. Munich's Frühlingsfest runs from late April.
Summer (June to August)
The warmest, busiest months. Most days sit at 22–25°C, but heatwaves above 30°C now arrive most summers and many older hotels have no air conditioning, so check before you book. Neuschwanstein's timed tickets sell out days ahead; buy online.
Autumn (September to November)
September is golden and settled, but Oktoberfest takes over Munich from the third Saturday, so stay elsewhere or book very early. October brings autumn colour in Bavaria and the Black Forest, plus Berlin's Festival of Lights. November is damp and the cheapest month, until markets open in the last week.
Winter (December to February)
Christmas markets run from late November until 23 or 24 December, and most close before Christmas Day. Daylight is short and nights drop below freezing, but mulled wine stalls, roasted chestnuts and lit old towns make up for it. January and February bring the lowest fares and quiet museums.
Which months should you avoid?
None outright. November is the dullest, and late September is the worst value in Munich because of Oktoberfest.
