Quick answer
April to June and September to October are the best times to visit Italy. Rome sees highs of 19–28°C, the Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre are open and evenings are long. July and August bring 31°C-plus heat and peak crowds, and many family restaurants close around 15 August. November to February is quiet and cheaper, with Venice flooding risk.

When is the best time to visit Italy?
April to June and September to October. Rome sits at 19–28°C, Florence and Venice are comfortable for walking, and the Amalfi Coast, Cinque Terre and Lake Como have reopened after winter. Daylight runs past 8 pm from May, so a day in Rome or Florence covers far more.
Our favourite month is September: the sea is still warm, Tuscany is in harvest, and the worst of the summer crowds has gone home.
Is Italy too hot in summer?
July and August average 31°C in Rome, and heatwaves of 38°C and more have become regular. The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Pompeii offer little shade. If summer is your only window, start sightseeing by 8 am, keep the Vatican for the afternoon, and choose hotels with confirmed air conditioning. Around Ferragosto (15 August), many family-run restaurants and shops close for one or two weeks.
What is Italy like in winter?
November to February is cool (12–17°C in Rome), quiet and cheaper. Museums have short queues and Christmas brings markets and nativity scenes. The trade-offs: rain in November, Venice's acqua alta tidal flooding from October to January, and the Amalfi Coast largely closed.
Planning around Indian holidays
- May–June school holidays: excellent weather, but book Vatican and Colosseum slots the day they open and VFS appointments 6–8 weeks ahead.
- Diwali (October–November): a good, cheaper window for the cities; the coast is winding down.
- Christmas–New Year: festive in Rome, busy at the Vatican.
