How to spend less without ruining the trip
- Book an open-jaw ticket into Rome and out of Venice; it usually costs the same as a return and saves a day.
- Buy Frecciarossa and Italo tickets 4–6 weeks ahead; fares on the same train can triple close to departure.
- Book the Colosseum and Vatican on the official sites. Resellers charge up to double for the same entry.
- Drink from Rome's free public fountains, and order coffee standing at the bar, where prices are lower than at a table.
- Stay in Venice itself for at least one night to avoid the day-tripper fee and see the city at its quietest.
- Pay in euros, not rupees, at card machines to avoid dynamic currency conversion.
How much does an Italy trip cost from India?
For an 8-night Rome, Florence and Venice trip, budget about ₹1.75 lakh per person at mid-range, twin sharing, including flights, Schengen visa and insurance. Budget trips start near ₹1.4 lakh; luxury runs from ₹3.6 lakh. Figures assume late-2026 rates and €1 = ₹102.
Where does the money go?
On a mid-range trip, roughly:
- Flights: about 30%. Air India resumed non-stop Delhi–Rome flights in March 2026; other cities connect through the Gulf, Istanbul or a European hub.
- Hotels: 30–40%. Venice is the most expensive per night, Rome the most variable, and Florence in between.
- Attractions: 10–15%. The Colosseum is €18 (€24 with the underground), the Vatican Museums about €25 online and the Uffizi €25–29 in high season.
- Food: 15–20%. Italy is good value for vegetarians: pizza, pasta and gelato cost far less than a sit-down meal in Switzerland.
Visa, insurance and TCS
A Schengen visa costs €90 (about ₹9,200) plus the visa centre's service charge, and insurance with €30,000 of medical cover is required. Our Italy visa guide covers documents and appointments.
If you book a package through an Indian agent, TCS is collected on the overseas tour package at the rate in force when you pay. You can adjust it against your income tax or claim it back as a refund — it appears in Form 26AS. Package invoices also show GST.
Hidden costs to plan for
- City taxes: charged per person per night at hotels in Rome, Florence and Venice, more for higher star ratings.
- Venice access fee: day visitors pay on peak days; hotel guests are exempt.
- Coperto: a cover charge of €2–4 per person on many restaurant bills.
When is Italy cheapest?
November, January and February bring the lowest hotel rates; Easter, May–June and September are the most expensive. July and August are pricey on the coast. See the best time to visit Italy.
