How to spend less without ruining the trip
- Stay in Haarlem, Amsterdam Noord or near Sloterdijk station; rates are often 25–40% below the canal ring and the train ride is 10–15 minutes.
- Travel in late September, October or February to March instead of mid-April or July, when hotel prices peak.
- Buy lunch at supermarkets such as Albert Heijn: salads, sandwiches and ready meals cost ₹400–700.
- Always pay in euros when a card machine offers rupees; dynamic currency conversion adds 3–6%.
- Book flights 8–12 weeks ahead for spring and compare one-stop Gulf routes with KLM's non-stops.
- Carry a refillable bottle; Dutch tap water is safe and bottled water at sights is overpriced.
How much does a Netherlands trip cost from India?
A 4-night Netherlands trip costs about ₹95,000 per person on a tight budget and ₹1,30,000 at mid-range, including return economy flights from Delhi or Mumbai and the Schengen visa, twin sharing. A luxury trip with a five-star canal-side hotel and private guiding starts around ₹2,40,000.
The biggest variable is not flights. It is your Amsterdam hotel.
Why are Amsterdam hotels so expensive?
Amsterdam has some of the highest hotel rates in Europe. The city limits new hotels, charges a tourist tax of 12.5% of the room price on top of 21% VAT, and has proposed raising the tax further from 2027. A plain 3-star double in the canal ring costs €160–220 a night in spring and summer, or ₹16,000–22,000 for the room.
The fix is location. Haarlem is 15 minutes away by train, and Amsterdam Noord and Sloterdijk are a short metro or train ride from the centre. Rates there are often 25–40% lower. See our Amsterdam where-to-stay guide.
Flights from India
KLM flies non-stop to Amsterdam from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, and IndiGo flies non-stop from Mumbai at the time of review. One-stop routes via the Gulf or Istanbul are often cheaper. Expect ₹45,000–75,000 return in economy, more in April, May and July.
Visa, insurance and TCS
The Schengen visa costs €90 (about ₹9,200) plus visa-centre charges, so budget ₹11,000–12,500 per adult. Travel insurance with at least €30,000 medical cover is mandatory. See our Netherlands visa guide and travel insurance.
If you book a package with an Indian tour operator, TCS is collected on the package value at the rate applicable when you pay. It is not a final cost: you claim it back against your income tax when you file your return.
Paying on the ground
Cards are accepted almost everywhere, and some cafés and counters take cards only. When a terminal offers a choice, pay in euros, never rupees. A forex card usually beats a credit card's markup; see our forex service.
| Spending style | Daily spend excluding hotel |
|---|---|
| Budget: supermarket lunches, walking | ₹3,000–4,500 |
| Mid-range: café lunches, one paid sight a day | ₹4,500–7,000 |
| Comfortable: sit-down dinners, guided tours | ₹8,000–12,000 |
Tulip season (mid-April) and July are the most expensive times. Late September and early October cost noticeably less, and the weather is still workable.
