When is the best time to visit the Netherlands?

For most Indian travellers the answer is mid-April to mid-May. Keukenhof is open (18 March to 9 May in 2027), the bulb fields around Lisse are in colour, days run to about 14 hours of light and afternoon highs sit around 14–18°C. The catch is that everyone else knows this too: Amsterdam hotel rates peak, and Keukenhof on a weekend is crowded by 10 am.

June to September is the other strong window. It is the warmest stretch, with highs of 20–22°C, good for cycling, canal cruises and day trips to Giethoorn or Kinderdijk. It also fits Indian school holidays. Expect the highest hotel prices of the year in July and August, and pack for showers: August is one of the wettest months by rainfall.

Which months should you avoid?

No month is a write-off, but November to February is grey, windy and dark by 4.30–5 pm. Rain is frequent rather than heavy. If you go in winter, go for the Amsterdam Light Festival and Christmas lights, and plan museum-heavy days. Hotel rates drop noticeably in January and February.

Tulip timing: what blooms when

PeriodWhat you see
Late MarchCrocuses, daffodils, hyacinths, early tulips
Mid-AprilPeak tulips in the fields and at Keukenhof
Early MayLate tulips; farmers start topping the fields

Bloom dates shift by a week or two with the weather, and a cold March pushes the peak later. The open fields are farmland, so view them from roads and cycle paths rather than walking in.

Travelling over Diwali (October–November)? Pack a proper rain jacket and plan indoor afternoons. The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are much easier to book then than in spring.

Visa timing

You need a Schengen visa, applied for through the Dutch visa centre if the Netherlands is your main destination. Apply 6–8 weeks ahead for April–May and July travel, when appointment slots fill quickly. See our Netherlands visa guide and the Schengen visa explainer.

Frequently asked questions

When do tulips bloom in the Netherlands?
Tulips usually peak from about the second week of April to early May, depending on how cold March was. Keukenhof is open from 18 March to 9 May in 2027. Early in the season you see more crocuses, daffodils and hyacinths; for open tulip fields around Lisse, aim for mid- to late April.
Is the Netherlands expensive in summer?
Yes. July and August bring the highest hotel rates of the year in Amsterdam, and the city adds a tourist tax of 12.5% of the room price. Booking three to four months ahead, staying in Haarlem or Amsterdam Noord, or choosing June or September keeps costs down without giving up warm weather.
Is October a good time to visit the Netherlands?
October is fair rather than ideal. Highs are around 15°C, rain is frequent and the days shorten quickly. On the plus side, crowds thin out after summer and museum tickets are easier to get. It suits a city-focused trip during the Diwali break if you pack layers and a waterproof jacket.
How early should I apply for a Schengen visa for a spring trip?
Apply six to eight weeks before travel for April and May, when appointment slots at visa centres in India fill quickly. You can apply up to six months ahead. Have hotel bookings, travel insurance and bank statements ready before you book the appointment to avoid a second visit.
Does it snow in Amsterdam?
Rarely, and when it does it seldom settles for long. Winter is more about grey skies, wind and drizzle, with highs of 5–7°C and lows near freezing. If snow is the point of your trip, pair the Netherlands with Austria or Switzerland instead.
