Himachal is the Himalayan state that works for everyone — Shimla and Manali for families wanting comfort and cool air, Spiti and Kinnaur for travellers wanting genuine high-altitude wilderness, and Dharamshala for something quieter in between.

Why travellers choose Himachal Pradesh

Accessibility is the strength. Shimla and Manali are an overnight drive or a short flight from Delhi, which makes a genuine mountain holiday possible over a long weekend.

The range within one state is remarkable — colonial hill stations, apple orchards, Tibetan monasteries at Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, and the moonscape of Spiti.

Adventure is well developed and safely run: paragliding at Bir Billing, trekking around Kasol and Tosh, river crossing and skiing at Solang.

What not to miss in Himachal Pradesh

  • Shimla — The Ridge, Mall Road and the Kalka–Shimla toy train, a UNESCO-listed narrow gauge line.
  • Manali and Solang Valley — Snow activities, Rohtang or Atal Tunnel access and the Beas valley.
  • Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj — The Dalai Lama's residence, Bhagsunag falls and the Triund trek.
  • Spiti Valley — Key Monastery, Chandratal and villages at 4,000 metres — a serious high-altitude journey.
  • Bir Billing — Among the best paragliding sites in the world, with tandem flights for beginners.
  • Khajjiar and Dalhousie — The 'mini Switzerland' meadow and quiet colonial-era hill stations.

When to travel

March to June is the main season, with pleasant days and snow still visible on the high peaks. July to September is monsoon — green and cheap but with real landslide risk on mountain roads. October and November are clear and quiet. December to February brings snow to Shimla, Manali and Dalhousie, though Spiti is largely inaccessible.

Entry and paperwork

No permits are required for Indian citizens in most of Himachal. Inner Line Permits apply for parts of Kinnaur and Spiti near the border, which we arrange. Rohtang Pass requires a vehicle permit issued on a daily quota, and we book it in advance where the itinerary needs it.

Good to know

Himachal Pradesh — frequently asked questions

Shimla or Manali?
Shimla for a gentler, more walkable hill-station feel and easier access. Manali for higher mountains, snow activities and access to Ladakh and Spiti.
When will I see snow?
Late December to February at Shimla and Manali town level. At Solang and Rohtang, snow generally persists well into spring.
Is Spiti suitable for families?
For families with older children and no altitude sensitivity, yes, with proper acclimatisation. It is not a soft-adventure destination and we are honest about that.
