Why travellers choose Goa

It remains the easiest beach holiday in India — short flights from every metro, no language barrier, and accommodation at every conceivable price point.

The Portuguese layer gives it a character no other Indian beach destination has: Latin Quarter streets in Panaji, whitewashed churches, and a distinct cuisine.

It works as well for a two-night break as a ten-night stay, and equally for couples, families and groups — provided the coast is matched to the group.

What not to miss in Goa

• North Goa beaches — Baga, Calangute, Anjuna and Vagator, with the Saturday night market at Arpora.
• South Goa beaches — Palolem, Agonda, Colva and Benaulim — quieter, cleaner and far more restful.
• Old Goa churches — Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral, both UNESCO-listed.
• Dudhsagar Falls — A four-tiered waterfall reached by jeep through Bhagwan Mahavir sanctuary, best just after the monsoon.
• Fontainhas, Panaji — The Latin Quarter's painted houses and narrow lanes, best walked in the early evening.
• Fort Aguada and Chapora — Sunset viewpoints over the Arabian Sea.

When to travel

November to February is peak season with the best weather and the highest prices, particularly over Christmas and New Year. October and March are excellent shoulder months. April and May are hot and humid but very cheap. June to September is the monsoon — most beach shacks close, but the countryside is spectacularly green and Dudhsagar is at full flow.

Entry and paperwork

No visa or permit is needed for Indian citizens. Note that riding a two-wheeler requires a valid licence and helmet, and enforcement is active. Some beaches have restrictions on alcohol and music after specified hours.
