Why travellers choose France

Paris concentrates more recognisable landmarks into a walkable core than almost any city on earth. The Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Notre-Dame, the Arc de Triomphe and the Seine sit within a few kilometres of each other.

Disneyland Paris makes the city one of the strongest family destinations in Europe — a full day there transforms the trip for children who would otherwise be museum-weary.

Beyond Paris, the country opens up: the châteaux of the Loire, the lavender fields and hill towns of Provence, the Riviera at Nice and Cannes, and the beaches and history of Normandy.

What not to miss in France

• Eiffel Tower — Summit tickets sell out weeks ahead. The second level often gives the better photograph; the summit gives the height.
• Louvre Museum — Vast enough to need a plan. A guided highlights tour of two to three hours beats six hours of wandering.
• Seine river cruise — One hour, best after dark when the bridges and monuments are lit.
• Disneyland Paris — Two parks, and genuinely a full day each if you have children under twelve.
• Montmartre and Sacré-Cœur — The best free view in Paris and the most atmospheric quarter to spend an evening in.
• Palace of Versailles — A half-day from central Paris. The gardens are the reason to go, and they are free on most days.

When to travel

April to June and September to October are ideal — mild, long days and manageable crowds. July and August are hot and extremely busy, with many Parisian businesses closed for the summer break. December is atmospheric with Christmas lighting but daylight is short. January and February are cheapest and quietest if you do not mind grey weather.

Entry and paperwork

France is in the Schengen area and requires a Schengen visa, which also permits onward travel across the zone. French consulates are strict on documentation and appointment availability tightens considerably from March onwards. Begin the application at least eight to ten weeks ahead; we prepare and review the complete file including the covering letter and financial evidence.
