When is the best time to visit Prague?

Prague is a walking city of cobbles, hills and river views, so weather matters more than in most capitals. May, June and September give mild days, long evenings and open gardens. December is the other favourite, for the Christmas markets. The table uses Prague's long-term averages.

The Czech Republic is in the Schengen area, so you need a Schengen visa from the Czech embassy (or from the country where you spend the most nights). You can apply up to six months before travel. See our Czech Republic visa guide and the Schengen visa guide.

Month by month

Spring (March to May)

March is still cold. Easter markets appear around Easter, which falls on 28 March in 2027. April turns mild and Petřín Hill's orchards blossom late in the month. May is the pick of spring: the Prague Spring music festival opens on 12 May every year, and beer gardens at Letná and Riegrovy sady fill up in the evenings.

Summer (June to August)

Warm at 22–25°C, with the odd 30°C day and afternoon thunderstorms. Crowds are the issue: Charles Bridge and the Astronomical Clock are packed from about 9 am. Cross the bridge at sunrise and visit Prague Castle late in the afternoon. Indian school holidays make May–June the busiest Schengen visa season too.

Autumn (September to November)

September is the best balance of weather and crowds. October brings gold to the parks and the Signal light festival. November is grey and damp, but hotel rates fall until the markets open at the end of the month.

Winter (December to February)

Christmas markets run from about 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, with stalls selling trdelník, roasted chestnuts and mulled wine (svařák). Expect nights below freezing. January and February are the quietest and cheapest months, good for concerts and museums if you dress for -4°C.

Which months should you avoid?

None outright. July–August is the most crowded, and January–February the coldest.

Frequently asked questions

Is Prague worth visiting in winter?
Yes, especially in December for the Christmas markets on Old Town and Wenceslas squares. Daytime highs hover around 0–3°C and nights drop below freezing, so pack thermals and waterproof shoes for icy cobbles. January and February are much quieter and cheaper, good for concerts, museums and beer halls rather than long walks.
When are the Prague Christmas markets in 2026?
The main markets on Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square are expected to run from about 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, though the city confirms exact opening dates only in the autumn. Stalls usually open from 10 am to 10 pm. Weekday evenings are less crowded than weekends.
Is Prague very crowded in summer?
The centre is crowded from June to August, especially Charles Bridge, the Astronomical Clock and Golden Lane at Prague Castle. Go early: the bridge is nearly empty at sunrise. Neighbourhoods like Vinohrady, Letná and Vyšehrad stay relaxed even in peak season and are pleasant places to eat and stroll.
Can I combine Prague with Vienna and Budapest?
Yes, it is a popular route. Prague to Vienna takes about four hours by train, and Vienna to Budapest about two and a half hours. All three are in the Schengen area, so one visa covers the trip. Apply to the embassy of the country where you will spend the most nights.
