Quick answer
Indians need a Schengen visa for Italy, lodged at a VFS Global centre and decided by the Italian Embassy or the consulate covering your state. The fee is EUR 90 (about ₹9,200) plus VFS charges. Apply to Italy when it is your longest stay, at least 15 days and ideally six to eight weeks before a summer trip.

Common mistakes that get Indians refused
- A bank balance that only just covers flights and hotels; Italy publishes minimum daily funds and officers compare against it.
- Template itineraries cramming Rome, Florence, Pisa, Venice, Milan and Lake Como into 7 nights; they read as copied, not planned.
- Not checking the visa sticker at collection. The Embassy asks you to verify name, dates, entries and days before you travel.
- Applying in the wrong jurisdiction: the mission that decides is the one covering your state of residence.
When should you apply to Italy?
Apply to Italy when it is your longest stay. Italy is often the anchor of Indian Europe tours: Rome, Florence, Venice and the Amalfi Coast easily take six or seven nights, so on many Italy–Switzerland–France itineraries Italy is the right country. The shared rules (90/180 days, the India cascade, EES) are on our Schengen visa guide.
Who handles Italian visas in India?
Italy uses VFS Global to collect applications and biometrics. Decisions are made by the Italian mission covering your state of residence: the Embassy in New Delhi or one of the Consulates General, including Mumbai and Kolkata. Apply in the jurisdiction where you live; picking another city's queue because it looks shorter can get the file returned.
How long does it take in summer?
Italy decides most clean tourist files in about 15 calendar days. From April to July, however, appointment availability is the real constraint. For travel in May or June, aim to book in February or March. Files must be lodged at least 15 days before departure, and late files are not fast-tracked.
What makes Italian files different?
- Means-of-subsistence table. Italy publishes an official table of the minimum funds a visitor must show, calculated per person and per day, with a higher daily rate for short trips. Officers compare your bank balance against it, so a statement that barely covers the package is weak.
- Check the sticker at collection. The Embassy specifically asks applicants to check visa details when collecting the passport: name, validity dates, number of entries and days allowed. Errors must be corrected before you fly.
- Itinerary realism. A simpler plan with real hotel bookings is more convincing than a six-city sprint.
The documents that matter most
Officers want to see that you can pay for the trip and will come home. Bring bank statements for the last three to six months with salary credits, ITRs for two to three years, a leave letter and recent salary slips, or GST and company records if you are self-employed. Retired parents should add pension statements and, if children are paying, a sponsorship letter with the sponsor's bank statements and ITRs.
If a family member in India is paying, prove the relationship with a birth or marriage certificate and show the sponsor's income, not just a letter.
