Our verdict
Pick Phuket for a shorter, cheaper beach holiday with non-stop flights, island-hopping to Phi Phi, nightlife and easy Indian food — 5 nights start around ₹22,000 on land. Pick Bali if you want culture and scenery as much as beaches — Ubud's terraces and temples, villa stays, cliff-top sunsets — and can spend about ₹32,000+ on land for 6 nights plus a one-stop flight.

Their seasons are opposite, so start there
If your dates are fixed, the calendar may decide for you. Bali is driest from April to October. Phuket, on Thailand's Andaman coast, is at its best from November to April, with rough seas and frequent rain from May to October. So a June or August holiday points to Bali; a December or February holiday points to Phuket. See best time to visit Bali and Phuket month by month.
Cost and flights
Phuket is cheaper and closer. Non-stop flights from Delhi and Mumbai take about 4–4.5 hours and cost ₹20,000–32,000 return. Five nights on land start around ₹22,000 per person, twin sharing, in a 3★–4★ hotel with transfers and a Phi Phi tour. Bali needs a one-stop flight of 9–12 hours, typically ₹28,000–42,000 return, and 6 nights on land start around ₹32,000. Thailand is visa-free for Indians with the online TDAC arrival card; Indonesia charges IDR 500,000 (about ₹2,700) for a visa on arrival plus a Bali tourist levy of about ₹810. Beaches and the sea
Phuket wins for swimming. In season, Kata, Karon and Kamala have calm, clear water, and day trips reach Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay and, from roughly November to April, the Similan Islands. In Bali, the famous west-coast beaches are surf beaches with strong currents; calm swimming is in Nusa Dua and Sanur, and the most striking coastal scenery is on cliff coves like Kelingking on Nusa Penida, reached by steep paths.
Culture, scenery and variety
Bali wins here. It is a Hindu island where temple ceremonies and offerings are part of everyday life, and Indian travellers often feel at home at temples like Tanah Lot and Uluwatu, where the Kecak fire dance is performed at sunset. Inland, Ubud has rice terraces, waterfalls, rafting and the sunrise trek up Mount Batur. Phuket's culture is concentrated in Old Town, Wat Chalong and the Big Buddha; most days revolve around the sea.
Honeymoon, family and group fit
- Honeymoon: Bali, for private pool villas from about ₹8,000 a night and more varied days. Phuket is a strong, cheaper option in winter.
- Families: Phuket, for shorter flights, water parks and calmer beaches.
- Friends' groups: Phuket for Bangla Road's nightlife; Bali for beach clubs in Seminyak and Canggu.
- Vegetarians: Phuket has more Indian restaurants; Bali has more vegan cafés.
Can you combine Bali and Phuket?
There is no reliable year-round non-stop between them, so you connect via Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Bangkok in about 5–7 hours. It works only with 9 nights or more, and because their best seasons differ, one of the two will be off-peak. If you want two places in one trip, Phuket with Krabi, or Bali with the Nusa islands, is easier. More pairings on our compare hub.
