Quick answer

Phuket's essentials are a speedboat day to the Phi Phi Islands, a Phang Nga Bay trip with sea-canoeing, the Big Buddha and Wat Chalong, an evening in Old Phuket Town and sunset at Promthep Cape. Add a cabaret show, an ethical elephant sanctuary or the Similan Islands between mid-October and mid-May. Four days covers the highlights comfortably.

How many days do you need in Phuket?

Four days covers the essentials: one for Phi Phi, one for Phang Nga Bay, one for the island tour of Big Buddha, Wat Chalong, Old Town and Promthep Cape, and one for the beach or a show. Our 4-day Phuket itinerary maps this out, and the Phuket trip cost page shows what it adds up to.

Which tours are worth paying for?

Phuket's tour market is huge and quality varies. A few rules help:

  • Speedboat over big boat for Phi Phi if you want Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon in one day; big ferries are cheaper and steadier for seniors but do fewer stops.
  • Small-group over budget tours for Phang Nga Bay, so you get canoeing instead of a crowded photo stop.
  • Similan Islands only in season, roughly mid-October to mid-May.
TourTypical priceMonsoon reliability
Phi Phi by speedboat₹3,500–6,000Often cancelled
Phang Nga Bay₹3,000–5,500Usually runs
Coral and Racha islands₹2,000–4,000Sometimes cancelled
Similan Islands₹6,000–9,500Closed

What should you watch out for?

Jet-ski operators on Patong beach are known for damage claims; photograph the craft before riding or skip it. Rip currents kill swimmers every monsoon, so obey red flags. Tuk-tuks in Phuket are expensive by Thai standards; use Grab or Bolt, or hire a car with a driver for island tours.

Book the Phi Phi trip for your second or third day, not your last. If the sea cancels it, you still have a back-up day.

See where to stay in Phuket for the right beach, and check the best time to visit Phuket for sea conditions. Indian passport holders enter visa-free for 30 days; read the Thailand visa guide first.

Frequently asked questions

Phi Phi from Phuket or from Krabi?
Both work, and journey times are similar at about an hour by speedboat. Choose based on where you are staying. From Phuket, tours leave from Rassada, Chalong or Ao Po piers; from Krabi, from Ao Nang or Nopparat Thara. If you are visiting both places, do Phi Phi from one and Hong Islands or Phang Nga Bay from the other.
Is Patong suitable for families?
Patong beach and its malls are fine for families by day, and it has the widest choice of hotels and Indian restaurants. Bangla Road becomes an adult nightlife zone after dark. Families who want a quieter base usually prefer Kata or Karon, 15 to 20 minutes south, which have calmer streets and good beaches.
Can non-swimmers enjoy Phuket's island tours?
Yes. Tour boats provide life jackets, and snorkelling stops are optional. Seniors and non-swimmers can stay on the boat or beach. Phang Nga Bay's canoe trips are paddled by a guide, so you just sit. Tell the operator in advance if anyone in your group cannot swim so the crew can keep an eye out.
