Quick answer

Krabi's best experiences are Railay Beach and Phra Nang Cave, the 4 Islands tour with its tidal sandbar, the Hong Islands lagoon, a Phi Phi day trip, the 1,260-step climb at Tiger Cave Temple and kayaking through mangroves at Ao Thalane. Base yourself in Ao Nang, give it four days, and keep evenings for the night markets.

Why choose Krabi over Phuket?

Krabi is the better pick if your idea of a beach holiday is scenery and quiet rather than nightlife and shows. The limestone cliffs at Railay, the island lagoons and the mangroves are all within an hour of Ao Nang, and the town feels more relaxed than Patong. The trade-off is fewer large hotels, fewer Indian restaurants and less to do after dark.

How many days do you need in Krabi?

Four days works well: one for Railay, one for the 4 Islands or Hong Islands, one for Phi Phi and one for Tiger Cave Temple, the Emerald Pool or kayaking. Add a night on Koh Lanta if you have time. Our 4-day Krabi itinerary follows this plan.

Day typeBest options
Island day4 Islands, Hong Islands, Phi Phi

What do you need to know about boats?

Almost every Krabi highlight involves a longtail or speedboat. Longtails from Ao Nang to Railay leave when they fill up, usually 8 to 10 passengers, so you may wait in quiet months. Island tours include national park fees in some quotes and not in others; ask before paying. From May to October, rough seas can cancel boats at short notice.

Pack water shoes. Railay East, the Tup Island sandbar and several boat landings have sharp rocks and shells underfoot.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Ao Nang to Railay?
Take a longtail boat from Ao Nang beach to Railay West, about 15 minutes, for roughly 100 to 150 baht per person each way. Boats leave once they have 8 to 10 passengers. After sunset, fares rise. In rough seas boats may switch to Ao Nam Mao pier or stop running, so do not leave Railay late on a stormy day.
Is the 4 Islands tour good for children?
Yes. The 4 Islands tour has short boat rides, shallow beaches and an easy sandbar walk at Tup Island. Life jackets are provided, and snorkelling is optional. Bring water shoes, sun protection and snacks. Longtail versions are slower and noisier; speedboats are quicker but bumpier, so choose based on your children's comfort.
Is Krabi good for vegetarians?
It is manageable. Ao Nang has several Indian restaurants and many Thai places that will cook vegetarian on request. Ask for no fish sauce and no shrimp paste, as both are standard in curries and salads. Jain travellers should carry some snacks for island tours, where lunch is usually a simple buffet with limited choice.
