Quick answer

Ao Nang is the best base for most Krabi trips, with tour pick-ups, longtails to Railay and the widest choice of hotels and restaurants. Railay is the most scenic but reachable only by boat. Klong Muang and Tubkaek suit luxury honeymoons, Nopparat Thara gives a quieter beach next to Ao Nang, and Koh Lanta suits slower beach stays.

Where should you stay in Krabi?

For most visitors, Ao Nang is the answer. Krabi's beauty is spread across islands and cliffs that you reach by boat, and Ao Nang is where those boats and tours start. It also has the most restaurants, mini-marts, pharmacies and Indian food. Stay at least two or three nights here, then consider a night or two somewhere more scenic.

Is it worth staying on Railay?

For couples, one or two nights on Railay is the highlight of a Krabi trip: you get the cliffs at sunset and Phra Nang beach early in the morning without the day crowds. For families with lots of luggage, older travellers or anyone visiting in the monsoon, it is harder work. Longtails land on the beach, so you will wade in with bags, and boats can stop in rough seas. Railay East faces mangroves and mudflats rather than a swimming beach.

What should you check before booking?

  • Distance to Ao Nang beach. Some "Ao Nang" hotels sit 2–3 km up the hill and rely on shuttles.
  • Boat transfers. On Railay, choose a resort that arranges your longtail from Ao Nang or the pier.
  • Season. On Koh Lanta, confirm your resort is open between May and October.

A good split for six nights: four in Ao Nang for tours, then two on Railay or at a Klong Muang resort to relax.

Mid-range 4★ doubles in Ao Nang typically cost ₹4,500–7,500 a night in season. Plan your days with things to do in Krabi and the 4-day Krabi itinerary, check the best time to visit Krabi, and read the Thailand visa guide before you fly.

Frequently asked questions

Ao Nang or Railay: which is better?
Ao Nang is better as a base: it is cheaper, has more food choices and every tour picks up there. Railay is more beautiful and quieter after the day-trippers leave, but it is boat-only and pricier. Many couples split their stay, spending most nights in Ao Nang and one or two on Railay.
Is Krabi Town a good place to stay?
Only for budget travellers or a single night in transit. Krabi Town has cheap hotels, good night markets and is close to Tiger Cave Temple, but it has no beach and island tours need a 30-minute transfer. For a holiday, Ao Nang or Nopparat Thara is a far better base.
Where should families stay in Krabi?
Ao Nang or Nopparat Thara. Both have family rooms, pools, easy island-tour pick-ups and nearby restaurants, including Indian food in Ao Nang. Nopparat Thara's beach is quieter and good for evening walks. Avoid Railay with young children and heavy luggage, since every arrival and departure is by longtail boat.
