Quick answer

Stay within a short walk of an MRT station. Marina Bay is best if budget allows, Clarke Quay and River Valley give a central base for less, and Bugis is the best value near the centre. Little India suits vegetarians and tight budgets. Sentosa only makes sense if your trip revolves around Universal Studios and the beaches.

The best areas to stay in Singapore

Marina Bay

₹₹₹

Best for: First-timers, couples and skyline views

Walk to Gardens by the Bay, Spectra and the Merlion; the Circle and Downtown MRT lines reach everything else.

The most expensive area, with few cheap eateries beyond Lau Pa Sat and Makansutra.

Clarke Quay and River Valley

₹₹

Riverside bars get loud late on weekends; ask for a high floor.

Doubles from ₹14,000 a night

Orchard Road

₹₹₹

Best for: Shoppers and families wanting large hotels

Malls, department stores and big hotels with family rooms, 10 minutes by MRT from Marina Bay.

Bugis and Kampong Glam

₹₹

Best for: Value with a central location

Cheaper than Marina Bay but two MRT stops away, next to Haji Lane, Bugis Street market and Arab Street.

Doubles from ₹11,000 a night

Little India and Farrer Park

₹

Best for: Vegetarians, budget travellers and seniors

South Indian breakfasts, thalis, temples and Mustafa Centre on your doorstep. Good value for larger families.

Crowded and noisy, especially on Sunday evenings, with fewer polished hotels.

Doubles from ₹8,000 a night

Sentosa

₹₹₹

Best for: Families focused on Universal Studios and beaches

Resorts beside Universal Studios, the beaches and the luge; children can rest between rides.

Every trip to the city takes 30–40 minutes, and island dining is pricey.

Doubles from ₹20,000 a night

₹ budget · ₹₹ mid-range · ₹₹₹ premium. Nightly rates are starting prices for a double room outside peak dates.

Where should you stay in Singapore?

For a first trip, stay within a short walk of an MRT station on the Circle or Downtown line. Singapore is compact, so location matters less than in Bangkok or Dubai, but a good MRT link still saves 30–60 minutes a day.

  • Marina Bay if budget allows and you want the skyline on your doorstep.
  • Clarke Quay or River Valley for a central, slightly cheaper base with restaurants by the river.
  • Bugis for the best value close to the centre.
  • Little India for vegetarian food and the lowest prices.
  • Sentosa only if the trip revolves around Universal Studios and the beaches.

Why Singapore hotels feel expensive

Rooms are small and rates are high. A basic 3-star double in a central area costs ₹8,000–11,000, and a 4-star near Marina Bay ₹14,000–20,000 or more. Rates also swing sharply with events: the Formula 1 weekend, large conferences and the year-end holidays can push prices up 50% or more, so check before you fix dates.

Tips for Indian families

  • Third person in the room: many hotels cap occupancy at two adults plus one child. Book a family room or connecting rooms rather than assuming an extra bed.
  • Breakfast: hotel breakfasts often cost S$25–40 per person. Little India and hawker centres serve better vegetarian breakfasts for a fraction of that.
  • Check-in time: 3 pm is standard, and flights from India often land early in the morning. Pay for early check-in or plan a morning at Jewel and Gardens by the Bay.

Choosing between a better hotel in Bugis and a basic one at Marina Bay? Take Bugis. You'll sleep better and reach Marina Bay in five minutes on the MRT.

Frequently asked questions

Which area of Singapore is best for vegetarians?
Little India is the easiest, with South Indian, Gujarati and Jain-friendly restaurants on Serangoon and Race Course roads, many open from early morning. Bugis and Clarke Quay are a short MRT ride away. Every large hawker centre also has an Indian or Chinese Buddhist vegetarian stall, so you're never far from a meat-free meal.
Is Sentosa a good place to stay with kids?
It's great if Universal Studios, the beaches and a resort pool are the point of your trip. Resorts sit next to the attractions, and children can rest between rides. The downside is that every trip to Marina Bay, Little India or the Night Safari takes 30–40 minutes or more. A split stay with one or two Sentosa nights works well.
Is it safe to stay in Little India or Geylang?
Little India is safe and well policed, though crowded and noisy on Sunday evenings. Geylang has cheap hotels but also a legal red-light district, so families usually avoid it. Singapore has very low crime overall; the bigger risk in budget areas is a tiny or windowless room, so check photos and recent reviews before booking.
