Quick answer

In Hanoi, most first-time visitors should stay in the Old Quarter, close to Hoan Kiem Lake, for walkable sights, street food and easy pick-ups for Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh tours. The French Quarter suits couples and seniors who want quieter, upscale hotels, and West Lake suits longer stays. Elsewhere, stay near Hoi An's old town and in Ho Chi Minh City's District 1.

The best areas to stay in Vietnam

Best for: First-timers, food lovers, walkers

Where should you stay in Hanoi?

Stay in the Old Quarter, ideally within a 10-minute walk of Hoan Kiem Lake. It is the city's most atmospheric neighbourhood, everything a first visit needs is walkable, and tour companies running Ha Long Bay cruises and Ninh Binh day trips pick up from Old Quarter hotels. If noise bothers you, the French Quarter just south of the lake gives you the same location with wider streets and quieter nights.

Where should you stay elsewhere in Vietnam?

  • Ha Long Bay: On an overnight cruise. Choose Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long routes for fewer boats.
  • Hoi An: Near the old town for evening lantern walks, or at An Bang beach, 10 minutes away, for a resort feel.
  • Da Nang: Along My Khe beach, with easy access to Ba Na Hills and the airport.
  • Ho Chi Minh City: District 1, for walking access to Nguyen Hue, Ben Thanh Market and the museums.

What should you check before booking in Hanoi?

  • Lifts and stairs. Many Old Quarter boutique hotels are five or six floors high on narrow plots. Confirm there is a lift, especially with seniors.
  • Window rooms. Budget rooms are sometimes windowless; check the room description.
  • Airport transfer. Noi Bai airport is about 45 minutes from the Old Quarter; most mid-range hotels arrange pick-ups.

Mid-range 4★ rooms in the Old Quarter cost about ₹4,000–7,000 a night; the French Quarter's grand hotels start well above ₹12,000.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Hanoi Old Quarter safe for tourists?
Yes. The Old Quarter is busy and generally safe, though pickpocketing and bag-snatching from motorbikes happen. Keep phones away from the roadside, use hotel safes for passports and agree prices before buying from street vendors. Crossing the road takes practice: walk slowly and steadily so motorbikes can go around you.
How many nights should I stay in Hanoi?
Two nights is enough for most first trips: one day for the Old Quarter, the lake and the Temple of Literature, and one for a Ninh Binh day trip. Add a night after your Ha Long cruise if your flight leaves early, or add two nights for Sapa.
Is the French Quarter worth the higher price?
For couples, seniors and anyone sensitive to noise, often yes. You get quieter streets, larger rooms and grand colonial-era hotels while staying a short walk from Hoan Kiem Lake. Budget-conscious travellers and food lovers usually get better value in a good Old Quarter boutique hotel.
