Quick answer

Split your stay. Spend two or three nights in the south, in Seminyak for restaurants and sunsets, Nusa Dua for family resorts or Uluwatu for cliff-top villas, then two or three in Ubud for rice terraces and temples. Kuta suits tight budgets near the airport, and Sanur suits families who want calm water and easy Nusa Penida boats.

The best areas to stay in Bali

Seminyak

₹₹

Best for: Couples and first-timers who want restaurants and sunsets

Walkable streets of restaurants, boutiques and beach clubs on a wide west-facing beach. Central for the airport (30–45 minutes) and for day trips to Uluwatu and Tanah Lot.

Evening traffic on the main roads is heavy, and the sea has strong currents; swim between the flags.

Doubles from ₹6,000 a night

Ubud

₹₹

Best for: Culture, rice terraces and honeymoon pool villas

Bali's cultural centre, with temples, dance performances, yoga and rice-field villas with private pools. The base for Tegallalang, Tirta Empul and the Batur trek.

No beach, about 1.5 hours from the airport, and the town centre's narrow roads jam at midday.

Doubles from ₹5,000 a night

Nusa Dua

₹₹₹

Best for: Families, seniors and resort holidays

A gated resort area with calm, reef-protected beaches, big pools and kids' clubs, next to Tanjung Benoa's water sports.

Feels removed from everyday Bali, and every meal outside the resort means a taxi.

Doubles from ₹9,000 a night

Uluwatu and Jimbaran

₹₹₹

Best for: Honeymooners, cliff-top views and sunsets

Cliff-top villas and resorts above some of Bali's best beaches, close to Uluwatu Temple and Jimbaran's seafood dinners on the sand.

Spread out, with steep steps down to many beaches and a two-hour drive to Ubud.

Doubles from ₹8,000 a night

Kuta and Legian

₹

Best for: Budget travellers and short stays near the airport

The cheapest hotels, malls like Beachwalk, plenty of Indian restaurants and the airport 15–20 minutes away.

Crowded, noisy and touristy; the beach collects debris in the wet season.

Doubles from ₹3,000 a night

Sanur

₹₹

Best for: Families with young children, older travellers, Nusa Penida trips

A calm east-coast town with a flat beachfront path, gentle water and the fast-boat harbour for Nusa Penida and Lembongan.

Quiet in the evenings, and the water is very shallow at low tide.

Doubles from ₹4,500 a night

₹ budget · ₹₹ mid-range · ₹₹₹ premium. Nightly rates are starting prices for a double room outside peak dates.

Where should you stay in Bali?

Most first-time visitors should split their stay: two or three nights in the south for beaches and sunsets, then two or three in Ubud for rice terraces and temples. Bali's traffic makes a single base costly in time; Ubud to Uluwatu can take two hours each way.

Which southern area suits you?

  • Seminyak for restaurants, beach clubs and a lively but grown-up feel.
  • Nusa Dua for family resorts with calm water and kids' clubs.
  • Uluwatu for cliff-top villas and the best sunsets, popular with honeymooners.
  • Kuta and Legian when budget and airport access matter most.
  • Sanur for a quiet, walkable beachfront and the Nusa Penida boats.

Hotel or private-pool villa?

Bali is one of the few places where a private-pool villa is affordable. One-bedroom pool villas in Ubud and Seminyak start around ₹9,000–12,000 a night, often with breakfast served in the villa, which makes them ideal for honeymooners. For families with young children, a resort with a shallow pool, kids' club and beach is often more practical. Check that the villa pool is fenced if you have toddlers.

What to check before booking

  • Walking distance: many Ubud villas sit up narrow lanes 15–20 minutes from the centre. Fine with a driver, tiring without one.
  • Beach access: on the Bukit, "beachfront" can mean 150 steps down a cliff.
  • Vegetarian food: Kuta, Seminyak and Ubud have plenty of Indian and vegetarian restaurants; in Nusa Dua, every meal costs resort prices.

In the wet season, book Ubud villas with free cancellation. Muddy paths and patchy power can make a remote villa less charming than its photos.

Frequently asked questions

Is Seminyak or Kuta better for a first trip to Bali?
Seminyak is better for most first-time visitors who can spend a little more: it has better restaurants, a cleaner beach and a calmer feel. Kuta suits tight budgets and short stays near the airport, with cheaper hotels and plenty of Indian food, but it's crowded and noisy. Legian sits between the two in both price and atmosphere.
Where should families with young children stay in Bali?
Nusa Dua or Sanur. Nusa Dua's resorts have calm, reef-protected beaches, big pools and kids' clubs, with Tanjung Benoa's water sports next door. Sanur has a gentle beach and a flat beachfront path for prams. Add two nights in an Ubud resort with a family pool for the cultural side of Bali.
How many nights should I stay in Ubud?
Two or three nights. That's enough for the Monkey Forest, a dance performance, Tegallalang, Tirta Empul and the Mount Batur sunrise trek without rushing. Honeymooners and yoga lovers often stay longer in a rice-field villa. One night is too short, since the drive from the south takes up to 1.5 hours each way.
