Quick answer

Nyepi, Bali's Day of Silence, is the Balinese Saka new year, usually in March. For 24 hours from 6 am, the whole island stops: the airport closes, no one goes out and hotels keep lights low. The evening before brings the ogoh-ogoh demon-effigy parades. Book a resort with good grounds, arrive at least a day early and avoid flights that day.

Highlights

  • Ogoh-ogoh demon effigies paraded and burned on the eve
  • Melasti purification processions to the sea
  • A full 24 hours of island-wide silence
  • Starry skies with no light pollution
  • The omed-omedan ritual in Sesetan the day after

What actually happens

Nyepi is the Balinese Hindu new year in the Saka calendar, and it is marked by silence. From 6 am on Nyepi day to 6 am the next morning, the island observes four restrictions: no fire or light, no work, no travel and no entertainment. Ngurah Rai International Airport closes for 24 hours, roads empty, beaches close, and pecalang, the village security guards, patrol to make sure people stay in. Mobile data has been switched off in some years.

The days around it are anything but quiet:

  • Melasti, two or three days before: processions in white carry temple objects to the sea or springs for purification.
  • Pengerupukan, the eve: every banjar (neighbourhood) parades its ogoh-ogoh, giant papier-mâché demons, through the streets at dusk with gamelan and torches, then burns them.
  • Ngembak Geni, the day after: families visit each other, and Sesetan in Denpasar holds its omed-omedan kissing ritual.

What it means for tourists

You cannot leave your hotel on Nyepi day. Hotels keep running inside, with restaurants open and curtains drawn at night, but pools may close after dark and lights are kept low. Choose a resort or villa with good grounds and a pool, stock up on snacks and treat it as a rest day. The night sky without light pollution is the reward.

How the dates work

Nyepi falls on the day after the new moon of the ninth Balinese month, usually in March and occasionally in late February or April. Indonesia's official holiday list confirms the date each year. Do not book flights in or out on Nyepi day.

Where to stay and what it costs

A six-night Bali trip starts at about ₹32,000 per person, land only, twin sharing. Villas with private pools cost ₹12,000–25,000 a night; book four to six weeks ahead, as some resorts sell Nyepi packages with minimum stays. Ubud, Sanur and Denpasar have the best ogoh-ogoh parades. Check entry rules on our Indonesia visa guide: Indian passport holders can use the e-Visa on Arrival, about IDR 500,000 (₹2,700), and pay Bali's tourist levy of IDR 150,000 (about ₹810).

Etiquette, photography and what to wear

Wear a sarong and sash at temples and during Melasti. At ogoh-ogoh parades, stay back at crossroads, where carriers spin the effigies, and do not use flash on ceremonies. March is about 31°C and still wet, so pack light clothes and a rain jacket.
