Our verdict
Pick Phuket if you want more of everything — non-stop flights from India, big resorts, Patong nightlife, Old Town cafés and organised tours — and don't mind crowds. Pick Krabi if you want quieter beaches, Railay's limestone cliffs, shorter and cheaper island trips, and a calmer base for honeymooners or older parents. With 5 nights or more, split your stay between both.

Which one is for you?
Choose Phuket if…
- You want non-stop flights and the shortest airport transfer
- Nightlife, shopping and shows matter to your group
- You need Indian restaurants close to your hotel
- You want the widest choice of hotels and resorts
Choose Krabi if…
- You want quieter beaches and limestone-cliff scenery
- It is a honeymoon and you prefer calm over crowds
- You plan several island trips and want shorter boat rides
- You want slightly lower hotel and transport costs
Phuket and Krabi are neighbours, not rivals
Phuket and Krabi sit on opposite sides of Phang Nga Bay on Thailand's Andaman coast, about 2.5–3 hours apart by road or 2–2.5 hours by ferry. They share the same weather, the same visa-free entry for Indians and many of the same island trips. The choice is about the kind of base you want.
Phuket: more of everything
Phuket is Thailand's largest island and the easier one to reach, with non-stop flights from Delhi, Mumbai and other Indian metros taking about 4–4.5 hours. It has the widest choice of hotels, from Patong's busy strip to quieter Kata, Karon and Kamala, plus big-ticket sights: the Big Buddha, Old Town's Sino-Portuguese shophouses, water parks and evening shows. Nightlife centres on Bangla Road, which runs till late.
The downsides are crowds and transport. Phuket's beaches are wide but busy, and taxis are expensive: THB 400–800 (₹1,080–2,160) for a short hop between beaches. See things to do in Phuket.
Krabi: quieter and better looking
Krabi province is calmer and more scenic. Ao Nang is the main base: walkable, with long-tail boats to Railay and Phra Nang beaches, framed by limestone cliffs, for about THB 100–150 (₹270–400). Island trips are shorter and cheaper — Phi Phi is about 45 minutes by speedboat from Ao Nang, against 1.5–2 hours from Phuket — and the 4-island tour by long-tail is a classic half-day. Indian restaurants are fewer, and nightlife is limited to a few bars. More in things to do in Krabi.
Non-stop options from India to Krabi are limited, so most travellers come via Bangkok or by road from Phuket airport.
Costs
Land packages for 4 nights start around ₹18,000 per person in Phuket and around ₹16,000 in Krabi, twin sharing, in 3★–4★ hotels with transfers and one island tour. Return flights to Phuket from Delhi or Mumbai usually cost ₹20,000–32,000. Krabi's beachfront resorts often cost less than Phuket's for similar quality. See Thailand trip cost.
Which suits families, couples and groups?
- Honeymooners: Krabi, for Railay's scenery and quieter resorts, or Phuket's Kamala and Surin if you want more luxury choice.
- Families: either. Phuket has more attractions; Krabi has calmer water and shorter boat rides.
- Friends' groups: Phuket, for nightlife and activities.
- Senior citizens: Phuket, for shorter airport transfers and more Indian food.
When to go
November to April is the season for both, with calm seas and dry days. From May to October the south-west monsoon brings rough seas, red flags on many beaches, some cancelled island trips and the seasonal closure of the Similan Islands. Hotel rates drop sharply. See Phuket month by month.
Doing both
With 5 nights or more, split your stay: 3 nights in Phuket, then 2 in Krabi, taking a ferry that stops at Phi Phi so the transfer doubles as sightseeing. Fly into Phuket and out of Phuket or Krabi. Check entry rules on our Thailand visa guide.
