Our verdict

Pick Australia for a first long-haul trip with family: non-stop flights to Sydney and Melbourne, Gold Coast theme parks, the Great Barrier Reef and easy Indian food, from about ₹1.35 lakh on land for 8 nights. Pick New Zealand if scenery is the point — Queenstown, Milford Sound, glaciers and road trips — and you accept a pricier visa, one-stop flights and land costs from about ₹1.5 lakh.

Which one is for you?

Choose Australia if…

  • It is your first long-haul trip and you want non-stop flights
  • You are travelling with young children or grandparents
  • Cities, theme parks and beaches matter as much as scenery
  • Indian vegetarian food is a daily need

Choose New Zealand if…

  • Landscapes, lakes and mountains are the main reason for the trip
  • You enjoy road trips and are comfortable driving
  • Adventure sports such as bungee and jet boating appeal
  • You want snow and skiing between June and September

Cities and variety, or scenery and road trips

Australia is a continent: big cities, the Gold Coast's theme parks, the Great Barrier Reef, the outback and a large Indian community. New Zealand is smaller and quieter, and its appeal is almost entirely landscape — fjords, glaciers, lakes and mountains within day drives of each other. For a first long-haul family trip, Australia is easier. For scenery and adventure, New Zealand is hard to beat.

Visas

Both need a visa applied for online, with financial documents. Australia's Visitor visa (subclass 600) costs about AUD 200 (₹11,600) and usually takes 2–6 weeks. New Zealand's Visitor Visa costs NZD 341 plus the NZD 100 International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy, about ₹22,900 in total, and typically takes 3–6 weeks. For school-holiday dates, apply 8–10 weeks ahead. See the Australia visa guide and New Zealand visa guide.

Flights

Australia is simpler: Air India flies non-stop from Delhi to Sydney and Melbourne in about 12–13 hours. New Zealand has no non-stop from India; expect 16–20 hours via Singapore, Sydney or Kuala Lumpur. Return fares run roughly ₹65,000–95,000 to Australia and ₹80,000–1.2 lakh to New Zealand.

Cost

An 8-night Australia trip (Sydney, plus Melbourne or the Gold Coast, with domestic flights) starts around ₹1.35 lakh per person on land, twin sharing, or roughly ₹2.1 lakh with flights. An 8-night New Zealand trip (Auckland, Rotorua, Queenstown) starts around ₹1.5 lakh on land, roughly ₹2.4 lakh with flights. A self-drive New Zealand itinerary can cost less than a coach-and-guide one. See Australia trip cost.

Food

Australia wins for Indian food: Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane have large Indian communities, so vegetarian and Jain meals are easy. Auckland and Wellington are fine, but small South Island towns have limited options, so carry snacks on long drives.

Getting around

Australia's distances are huge — Sydney to Cairns is a 3-hour flight — so domestic flights are essential. New Zealand is ideal for self-drive: both countries drive on the left, as in India, and a valid Indian licence in English is generally accepted for short visits. Queenstown to Milford Sound is about 4 hours each way by road, so many visitors take a coach-and-cruise day trip or fly.

What each does best

Australia: the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, the Great Ocean Road, Gold Coast theme parks, the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns, and wildlife parks with kangaroos and koalas.

New Zealand: Milford Sound, Queenstown's bungee and jet boats, Hobbiton, Rotorua's geothermal parks and Māori culture, the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers, and skiing from June to September. See things to do in New Zealand.

Seasons

Seasons are reversed from India's. Sydney and Melbourne are best from September to November and March to May; the tropical north is best from May to October. New Zealand is best from December to March for summer road trips, or June to September for snow. See best time to visit New Zealand.

Can you combine them?

Yes, with 14 nights or more. Sydney and Melbourne have frequent flights of about 3–3.5 hours to Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown. Fly into Sydney and home from Auckland, allow at least 6 nights in New Zealand, and get both visas before leaving India.

Frequently asked questions

Which is cheaper, Australia or New Zealand?
Australia, for most trips from India. An 8-night trip starts around ₹2.1 lakh per person with flights, against about ₹2.4 lakh for New Zealand. Australia has non-stop flights and a cheaper visa; New Zealand's visa and conservation levy together cost about ₹22,900, and flights need at least one stop.
Is Australia or New Zealand better for families?
Australia suits families with younger children: non-stop flights, Gold Coast theme parks, wildlife parks, beaches and easy Indian food. New Zealand suits families with older children and teenagers who enjoy outdoor activity, such as jet boats, glow-worm caves, Hobbiton and snow in winter, and who can handle long drives.
Is there a direct flight from India to New Zealand?
Not at the time of review. Most travellers connect through Singapore, Sydney, Melbourne or Kuala Lumpur, with total journey times of 16–20 hours to Auckland. Air New Zealand has said it intends to start India flights later this decade, so check schedules when you book.
How long does an Australia visa take for Indians?
Typically 2–6 weeks for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) applied for online, though it can take longer in busy months such as May–June and October–December. The fee is about AUD 200, around ₹11,600. Apply at least 8 weeks before travel with clear bank statements, a leave letter and income tax returns.
