How to spend less without ruining the trip

  • Fly in February–March or August–early September, when fares from India are usually lowest.
  • Book an open-jaw ticket into Sydney and out of Melbourne to save a domestic flight.
  • Choose hotels or apartments with kitchenettes; supermarket groceries cost far less than eating out.
  • Use public transport with a contactless card; daily and weekly fare caps apply, and Melbourne's city-centre trams are free.
  • Add checked bags when booking domestic flights; adding them at the airport costs much more.
  • Claim GST back under the Tourist Refund Scheme on single-store purchases of AUD 300 or more.

How much does an Australia trip cost from India?

A 9-night Australia trip covering Sydney, Cairns and Melbourne costs about ₹1,95,000 per person on a budget, ₹2,55,000 at mid-range and ₹4,80,000 and up for luxury, including return economy flights from India and the visitor visa, twin sharing.

Flights

Air India flies non-stop from Delhi to Sydney and Melbourne at the time of review, about 12–13 hours. Other cities connect via Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok or the Gulf. Expect ₹58,000–98,000 return, and much more from mid-December to January. Book an open-jaw ticket into Sydney and out of Melbourne.

Visa

The visitor visa (subclass 600) is applied for online. At the time of review the fee is about AUD 250 (roughly ₹14,500) for applicants outside Australia, after an increase in July 2026, and Indian applicants usually give biometrics at a visa centre. Budget ₹14,500–17,500. See our Australia visa guide.

Domestic flights

Australia is huge, and domestic flights are a real line item. Sydney to Cairns and Cairns to Melbourne each cost about ₹9,000–15,000 one way with a checked bag. Low-cost fares look cheaper until you add luggage.

Hotels and food

Mid-range 3–4 star hotels cost AUD 200–300 (₹11,600–17,400) a night for a double in Sydney and Melbourne, a little less in Cairns. Eating out is expensive: a café lunch costs AUD 20–30 and a dinner main AUD 30–45. Indian restaurants and supermarket meals keep this in check.

Tour or entry, per personTypical cost
Great Barrier Reef day₹14,500–20,000
Great Ocean Road tour₹7,500–10,500
Phillip Island penguins with transport₹8,700–11,600
Blue Mountains tour₹7,500–10,400
Opera House tour₹2,600–3,200

TCS and money

If you buy a package from an Indian operator, TCS is collected on the package value; you claim it back when you file your income tax return. Cards work everywhere, including contactless on public transport. A forex card avoids high markups; see our forex service.

Australian prices include 10% GST. Visitors can claim it back at the airport under the Tourist Refund Scheme on purchases of AUD 300 or more from a single store.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an Australia trip cost for a couple from India?
For two people, a 9-night mid-range trip covering Sydney, Cairns and Melbourne costs about ₹5.1–6 lakh in total, including flights, visas, hotels, two domestic flights, the main tours and meals. Travelling in February, March or August and staying in apartments with kitchens can bring it closer to ₹4.2 lakh.
What is the cheapest time to fly to Australia from India?
February to March and August to early September usually have the lowest fares, as they fall outside Indian school holidays and the Australian summer. Late November to mid-January is the most expensive. Booking two to three months ahead usually beats waiting for sales.
Is Australia more expensive than Europe for Indian travellers?
On the ground, Australia costs about the same as Western Europe: similar hotel rates, slightly higher restaurant prices. The trip overall usually costs more because flights are longer, domestic flights are needed between cities, and the visa fee is higher than a Schengen visa.
How much spending money do I need per day in Australia?
Budget ₹4,000–6,500 (AUD 70–110) per person per day for food, local transport and small entries, excluding hotels and big tours. Eating at Indian restaurants, food courts and supermarkets keeps you at the lower end; sit-down dinners with drinks push you past the top.
