  • You want to add Coonoor, Mudumalai or Mysuru to the same trip

Coffee country or a classic hill station?

Coorg (Kodagu) and Ooty are both 5–7 hours from Bengaluru and cost about the same, so the choice is about style. Coorg is rolling coffee and pepper estates where the stay itself is the holiday. Ooty is a proper hill station at 2,240 m, with a checklist of sights, a heritage railway and a busy town centre.

Getting there

Coorg's main town, Madikeri, is about 250 km from Bengaluru, a 5–6 hour drive via Mysuru. There's no railway in Coorg; Mysuru, Kannur and Mangaluru airports are each two to four hours away by road. Ooty is about 270 km from Bengaluru, but the route crosses Bandipur and Mudumalai, where traffic is stopped from 9 pm to 6 am. From Delhi or Mumbai, Ooty is simpler: fly to Coimbatore and drive about three hours.

What does each cost?

A 3-night Coorg trip with a private car from Bengaluru and a good homestay or plantation resort starts around ₹11,000 per person, twin sharing. Ooty starts slightly lower, at about ₹10,000 for 3 nights in a 3-star hotel with a car. Coorg's luxury estate resorts can run ₹20,000–40,000 a night, while Ooty's top end is cheaper. Both get more expensive on long weekends.

Weather

Ooty is noticeably cooler, with summer days around 20–22°C and winter nights close to freezing in December and January. Coorg is milder and more humid, around 28–30°C in April. Coorg's June–September monsoon is heavy, with landslides in some years, but the estates turn deep green and Barapole river rafting runs in this season. Ooty is busiest from April to June. See when to visit Coorg and Ooty.

What you'll actually do

In Coorg, an estate walk with coffee tasting, Abbey Falls, sunset at Raja's Seat, the Dubare elephant camp and the Tibetan Golden Temple at Bylakuppe fill two days easily. In Ooty, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, the Government Botanical Garden, Ooty Lake, Doddabetta peak (2,637 m) and Pykara fill the same time. Ooty has more for young children; Coorg suits adults happy to read on a verandah. Plan with things to do in Coorg.

The honest trade-offs

Coorg's attractions are modest and spread out, and homestay quality varies, so read recent reviews carefully. Ooty's centre is congested and over-built, and vehicles need an online Nilgiris e-pass at the time of review, with caps on busy days. Many travellers prefer Coonoor as a quieter Nilgiris base.

Who should go where

Couples, friends and remote workers usually pick Coorg. Families with children and anyone flying in from North India usually pick Ooty. Both appear in our India tour packages.

Frequently asked questions

Is Coorg or Ooty better for a weekend from Bengaluru?
Coorg is slightly easier: about 250 km and 5–6 hours by road, with no forest night closure on the way. Ooty is about 270 km but crosses Bandipur and Mudumalai, closed to traffic from 9 pm to 6 am, and needs a Nilgiris e-pass. Leave Bengaluru early on Saturday for either.
Which is better for a honeymoon, Coorg or Ooty?
Coorg is usually better for couples. Plantation resorts and estate homestays offer privacy, walks through coffee and pepper, and good food without a crowded town around you. Ooty works if you stay in a heritage cottage in Coonoor and avoid the April–June peak, when the town is very busy.
Is Coorg worth visiting in the monsoon?
Yes, if you like rain. From June to September Coorg is deep green, waterfalls are full and Barapole rafting runs. But rain is heavy and constant, leeches are common on estate walks, and landslides have closed roads in some years. Choose a homestay with good indoor space and check road conditions before you drive.
Which is colder, Coorg or Ooty?
Ooty is colder. At about 2,240 m, its winter nights in December and January can drop close to freezing, and summer days stay around 20–22°C. Coorg, at about 1,150 m in Madikeri, is milder and more humid, with April days around 28–30°C and cool but not cold winter nights.
