Our verdict
Choose Munnar for greener, less built-up tea country and an easy add-on to a Kerala backwater trip; 3 nights start around ₹10,000 per person. Choose Ooty if you're driving from Bengaluru, Mysuru or Coimbatore, want the Nilgiri toy train and cooler weather, or are travelling with children; 3 nights also start around ₹10,000. For scenery, Munnar usually wins.

How Munnar and Ooty differ
Both are South Indian hill stations built around tea, but they feel different. Munnar, in Kerala's Western Ghats at about 1,600 m, is mostly plantation country with a small town at its centre. Ooty (Udhagamandalam), in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiris at about 2,240 m, is a larger, older town with lakes, gardens and a lot more traffic. Munnar wins on landscape; Ooty wins on things for children to do and on access from Bengaluru.
Getting there
Munnar is about four hours by road from Kochi airport, so it slots easily into a Kerala trip that also covers Thekkady and Alleppey. From Bengaluru it's a long 9–10 hour drive. Ooty is about three hours from Coimbatore airport and 6–7 hours from Bengaluru via Mysuru, passing through Bandipur and Mudumalai tiger reserves, where the forest road is closed to traffic from 9 pm to 6 am. Time your drive accordingly.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage line, climbs from Mettupalayam to Ooty in about five hours on its rack section. Seats are limited and sell out weeks ahead on IRCTC from April to June.
What does each cost?
Three nights in either place with a private car and a 3-star hotel start at about ₹10,000 per person, twin sharing. Munnar's plantation resorts with valley views cost more than Ooty's town hotels, while Ooty's prices jump in April and May when Tamil Nadu and Karnataka schools close.
Timing and crowds
Munnar is best from September to March, after the monsoon has filled the waterfalls. Eravikulam National Park, home of the Nilgiri tahr, usually closes for about two months from February for calving. Ooty's high season is April to June, with the flower show at the Government Botanical Garden in May. At the time of review, vehicles entering the Nilgiris need an online e-pass, with daily caps on weekends and holidays, a rule introduced in 2024 to control congestion; check the latest before driving. More on when to visit Ooty and Munnar.
The honest trade-offs
Munnar's roads are narrow and winding, the June–August monsoon is very wet, and some estate resorts are 30–60 minutes from town on rough tracks. Ooty's centre is crowded and over-built, and the lake-and-garden circuit can feel like a queue in peak season. Many travellers now stay in Coonoor, about 19 km away, for a quieter base; see where to stay in Ooty.
Who should go where
Honeymooners and anyone already in Kerala should pick Munnar. Families driving from Bengaluru or Coimbatore, and anyone who wants the toy train, should pick Ooty, ideally outside the April–May rush.
