Quick answer

The best things to do in Ooty are riding the Nilgiri Mountain Railway up from Mettupalayam, walking the Government Botanical Garden, driving up Doddabetta Peak, visiting a working tea factory, seeing Pykara Falls and Lake, and taking a day trip to Coonoor's viewpoints. Two full days covers the essentials; a third lets you add Avalanche Lake or Mudumalai.

Is the Ooty toy train worth it?

Yes, if you ride the right section. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, part of the UNESCO-listed Mountain Railways of India, climbs from Mettupalayam at about 330 m to Ooty at about 2,200 m. The full uphill run takes around five hours through tunnels, bridges and forest, and the stretch below Coonoor is the most dramatic. Coonoor to Ooty is shorter and gentler.

Book on IRCTC as soon as the 60-day reservation window opens, especially for April–June and long weekends. Seats are limited and sell out fast; special services run in peak seasons when announced.

What can you skip?

Ooty Lake's boat house and the town's indoor attractions are crowded and dated, so give them an hour at most. The "Shooting Point" on the Pykara road is mostly a horse-ride stop. Spend that time in Coonoor instead, which is quieter and has better viewpoints.

Do you need an e-pass?

Vehicles not registered in the Nilgiris need an e-pass to enter the district, applied for online on the Tamil Nadu e-pass portal. Your cab driver usually handles it, but check before setting out from Coimbatore or Mysuru.

Avalanche Lake is inside a protected area. You can only go on the forest department's vehicle from the Avalanche check post, and slots are limited, so go early.

More planning help: the best time to visit Ooty, where to stay in Ooty and, for a second hill region, things to do in Coorg. For a combined trip, see India tour packages.

Frequently asked questions

How do I book the Ooty toy train?
Book on the IRCTC website or app, or at railway reservation counters, up to 60 days ahead. Search Mettupalayam (MTP) to Udhagamandalam (UAM). In summer and on long weekends, seats sell out within minutes of opening. If you miss out, try the Coonoor–Ooty section, which has more services, or check for special trains.
How many days are enough for Ooty?
Two full days, or three nights if you're riding the toy train up. Spend one day on the Botanical Garden, Doddabetta, a tea factory and Pykara, and another on Coonoor's viewpoints and estates. A third day lets you add Avalanche Lake, Kotagiri or a Mudumalai safari without rushing.
Is Coonoor better than Ooty?
For a quieter stay, many travellers think so. Coonoor is smaller, greener and less crowded, with better viewpoints and heritage bungalows. Ooty has more hotels, restaurants and the big-name sights. A good plan is to stay in Coonoor or the quieter edges of Ooty and day-trip between them.
Is Ooty good for children?
Yes. The toy train, Botanical Garden, boating at Ooty Lake and Pykara, chocolate shops and the Theppakadu elephant camp near Mudumalai all work well for children. Pack warm clothes, especially for evenings from November to February, and plan short drives because the ghat roads cause motion sickness.
