When is the best time to visit Ooty?

March to June. At about 2,240 m, Udhagamandalam is the highest of the major South Indian hill stations, and spring and early summer bring its most dependable weather: sunny days around 20–24°C, cool evenings and flowering gardens. It's why families from Chennai, Bengaluru and Coimbatore descend in April and May.

Is Ooty too crowded in summer?

Often, yes. In May the Government Botanical Garden hosts the Flower Show, usually mid-month, and the ghat road from Mettupalayam can back up for hours. Toy-train seats sell out soon after booking opens. If you travel in summer, go midweek, start sightseeing early and book everything ahead.

Since 2024, vehicles not registered in the Nilgiris have needed a free online e-pass to enter the district, with daily caps in peak months. Check the current rules on the Tamil Nadu e-pass portal before you drive up.

What is Ooty like in winter and the monsoon?

MonthsWeatherVerdict
Dec–Feb18–21°C days, frost on clear nightsGood for couples who like the cold
Mar–Jun20–24°C days, mostly dryBest weather, peak crowds
Jul–AugDrizzle and mistQuiet, moody, cheap
SepFresh after the rainsUnderrated
Oct–NovHeaviest rainLeast reliable

The Nilgiris catch both monsoons, and October is often wetter than July here, which surprises many visitors who assume the south-west monsoon is the main event.

For winter trips, choose a hotel that provides room heaters. Many older cottages don't, and January nights can drop to near freezing.

How long should you stay?

Two nights covers Ooty town, Doddabetta, Pykara and Coonoor comfortably. Add a third if you're taking the toy train up from Mettupalayam, which eats most of a morning.

Plan the rest with things to do in Ooty and where to stay in Ooty. For a coffee-country alternative, compare the best time to visit Coorg, or browse India tour packages.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an e-pass to visit Ooty?
Vehicles not registered in the Nilgiris district have needed a free e-pass since May 2024, applied for online on the Tamil Nadu e-pass portal. Government buses and the toy train have been exempt. Rules and daily caps have changed several times, so check the portal shortly before you set out. Your cab operator can usually apply on your behalf.
Is Ooty cold in December?
Yes. Days are mild at about 19°C, but nights fall to around 5–6°C in town and close to 0°C on clear nights in open grassland, with frost on the ground by morning. Pack a proper jacket, a warm layer for the evening and socks for sleeping. Ask your hotel whether rooms have heaters before you book.
When is the Ooty Flower Show?
The Flower Show is held at the Government Botanical Garden, usually for about five days in mid-May. The Tamil Nadu government announces exact dates a few weeks ahead. It is the busiest time of year in Ooty, so book hotels early, expect traffic on the ghat roads and arrive at the garden when it opens.
Is Ooty good to visit in the monsoon?
July and August are damp and misty rather than stormy, and Ooty is quiet and cheap then, which suits couples happy to read by a fire. October and November bring heavier rain from the north-east monsoon, with occasional landslides on the ghat roads. For sightseeing and clear views, March to June and September are better.
