Quick answer

October to March is the best time to visit Coorg. The monsoon has passed, waterfalls are still full in October and November, and days are a mild 25–28°C with cool nights. March and April bring the coffee blossom. Avoid July if you can: Kodagu gets very heavy rain, and landslides have closed roads in recent monsoons.

When is the best time to visit Coorg?

October to March. Kodagu (Coorg) sits at roughly 900–1,700 m on the Western Ghats. After the south-west monsoon, from about October, the coffee estates are lush, Abbey and Iruppu falls are still strong, and the air is fresh. December and January are the coolest months, with nights around 13–14°C in Madikeri.

What is Coorg like in each season?

  • October–November: Our pick. Green estates, full waterfalls and the coffee berries ripening. Rafting at Dubare usually runs once the Kaveri settles to the right level.
  • December–February: Cool and dry, ideal for treks to Tadiandamol and Mandalpatti. It's also coffee-picking season, so estate walks show the harvest in action.
  • March–April: Warmer, around 30°C at midday. The first blossom showers trigger the coffee bloom, with white flowers and a jasmine-like scent across the estates for a few days.
  • May: Warm by Coorg standards and busy with Bengaluru families on school holidays.
  • June–September: Monsoon. Madikeri can receive over 1,000 mm in July. Barapole river rafting runs in this season, but treks close, leeches are everywhere, and landslides have cut roads such as the Madikeri–Mangaluru highway in some years.

Long weekends matter more than the calendar here. Coorg is a 5–6 hour drive from Bengaluru, so homestays fill up on every three-day weekend. Travel midweek if you can.

Which festivals happen in Coorg?

Kaveri Sankramana, around 17 October, draws pilgrims to Talacauvery, the source of the river. Puthari, the Kodava harvest festival, falls in late November or December. Madikeri Dasara in September–October has night-long processions of lit-up tableaux.

Frequently asked questions

Is Coorg worth visiting in the monsoon?
For mist, waterfalls and quiet homestays, yes, especially in late June and September. But July and August bring very heavy rain, leeches, closed trekking trails and a real risk of landslides on hill roads. If you go, stay somewhere with easy road access, drive only by day and keep an eye on district weather alerts.
When does coffee blossom in Coorg?
Coffee in Coorg usually flowers in March or April, about a week after the first good pre-monsoon shower, known locally as the blossom shower. The white flowers last only a few days, so the timing is hard to predict. Estate homestays can tell you when the rain has come and the bloom is due.
Is Coorg cold in December?
It is cool rather than cold. Days are about 25°C and nights drop to around 13–14°C in Madikeri, a little lower on higher estates. A light jacket or sweater is enough for evenings and early-morning drives to Mandalpatti or Raja's Seat. Most homestays have hot water but not room heating.
How crowded is Coorg on long weekends?
Very. Coorg is the default weekend escape for Bengaluru and Mysuru, so on three-day weekends the Madikeri town centre, Abbey Falls and Dubare see long queues, and good homestays sell out weeks ahead. Visit midweek if you can, or base yourself in quieter areas such as Virajpet or Kakkabe.
