Quick answer

November to February is the best time to visit Alleppey. The backwaters are calm, humidity is lower and overnight houseboat cruises are comfortable. Christmas–New Year is the most expensive week. August is a strong alternative for the Nehru Trophy snake-boat race and Onam, while June and July are wet but cheap, with houseboats still sailing.

When is the best time to visit Alleppey?

November to February, for most travellers. Alappuzha (Alleppey) is at sea level, so it's warm all year, with highs of 31–33°C. The real question is rain and humidity. In these four months the sky is mostly clear, evenings on the houseboat deck are pleasant, and the paddy fields of Kuttanad are green.

How does the season affect houseboat prices?

Nov, Jan–FebHighBest weather; book a few weeks ahead
Mar–MayLowHot and humid; an AC boat is essential
Jun–JulLowestHeavy rain; big discounts
Aug–OctMediumBoat races and Onam; good value in Sep–Oct

Is a monsoon houseboat trip worth it?

Some people love it: rain drumming on the thatched roof, empty canals, and rates sometimes half of December's. Boats keep cruising unless the district issues a weather warning, and the scenery is at its greenest. The downsides are humidity, grey skies for photos and occasional flooding in low-lying Kuttanad. Choose a boat with a covered upper deck.

Which boat races are worth seeing?

The Nehru Trophy on Punnamada Lake is the big one, usually on a Saturday in August; in 2026 it was on 22 August. The Champakulam Moolam race in June or July is the oldest snake-boat race in the state, and the Champions Boat League runs a series of races from about August to November.

Whatever the month, houseboats must stop cruising and anchor by about 5:30 pm under local rules, so board by noon to get the full afternoon on the water.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race in Alleppey?
It is usually held on a Saturday in August on Punnamada Lake. The 2026 edition, the 72nd, was on 22 August. Dates are announced by the Nehru Trophy Boat Race Society a few months ahead. Tickets range from simple standing areas to covered pavilions, and Alleppey hotels and houseboats fill up, so book as soon as the date is out.
Are Alleppey houseboats cheaper in the monsoon?
Yes. In June and July, overnight houseboat rates are often 30–50% lower than in December and January, and you can negotiate directly if you book close to the date. The scenery is lush, but expect humidity and grey skies. Ask for a boat with an enclosed upper deck so you can sit outside in the rain.
Is Alleppey too hot in April?
It is hot and humid, with highs around 33°C and high humidity, which makes the afternoon sun on deck uncomfortable. Mornings and evenings are fine. If you travel in April or May, pay for a boat with air-conditioning that runs through the day, not just at night, as some budget boats only switch it on after dark.
Do houseboats run during the monsoon?
Yes, houseboats operate through most of the monsoon. The district administration can suspend cruising during red alerts or flooding, and operators will then either keep the boat docked or reschedule. Book with an operator that offers a clear rescheduling policy, and keep your Alleppey night flexible within a Kerala trip.
