Quick answer

For one night in Alleppey, stay on an overnight houseboat. For two or more nights, pair the houseboat with a lakeside resort on Vembanad Lake or a beach resort at Marari, 12 km north. Alleppey town is the cheapest base, Kuttanad homestays offer village life, and Kumarakom across the lake has the most upmarket lake resorts.

The best areas to stay in Alleppey

Overnight houseboat

₹₹

Best for: The backwater experience, couples, families

A private floating room with a cook and crew, cruising Kuttanad's canals and Vembanad Lake from noon until it anchors at about 5:30 pm.

Small cabins, limited AC hours on budget boats and generator noise on some; one night is usually enough.

Doubles from ₹8,000 per boat for two, with meals a night

Lakeside resorts on Vembanad

₹₹₹

Best for: Comfort with lake views, older travellers

Resorts on the lake edge north of town and on Punnamada Lake offer pools, Ayurveda and lake-view cottages, with shikara rides from their own jetties.

Less of a cruise feel, and some resorts are reachable only by boat, which complicates late arrivals.

Doubles from ₹6,000 a night

Marari beach

₹₹₹

Best for: Beach plus backwaters, families

A quiet fishing-village beach 12 km north of Alleppey with good resorts and homestays; ideal after a houseboat night.

The sea is often rough, so swim only where resorts post lifeguards, and there are few independent restaurants.

Doubles from ₹6,000 a night

Alleppey town and beach road

₹

Best for: Budget travellers, short stays

Guesthouses and small hotels near the beach, boat jetty and canals, walkable to cafés and the public ferry.

Town traffic and noise, and no backwater views from most rooms.

Doubles from ₹1,500 a night

Kuttanad canal homestays

₹

Best for: Village life, slow travel

Family homestays on canal banks in villages such as Kainakary and Champakulam, with home-cooked meals and canoe trips from the door.

Basic rooms and mosquitoes, and some are reachable only by boat; not for those wanting hotel facilities.

Doubles from ₹2,500 a night

Kumarakom

₹₹₹

Best for: Luxury lake resorts, honeymooners

On the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake, about 1.5 hours by road from Alleppey, with high-end lake resorts and a bird sanctuary.

Pricier, and a separate destination that doesn't give you Alleppey's canal scenery.

Doubles from ₹8,000 a night

₹ budget · ₹₹ mid-range · ₹₹₹ premium. Nightly rates are starting prices for a double room outside peak dates.

Houseboat, lakeside resort or Marari: which is best?

Each does a different job, and the best Alleppey trips combine two.

OptionBest forTypical stayWatch out for
HouseboatThe classic experience1 nightCabin size, AC hours
Lakeside resortComfort, older travellers1–2 nightsBoat-only access
Marari beachSea plus backwaters1–3 nightsRough sea
Kuttanad homestayVillage life1–2 nightsBasic facilities

What's the best combination?

For a two-night Alleppey stop, book one night on a houseboat and one at Marari or a lakeside resort. You get the cruise, then a proper bed and shower, and a beach or pool afterwards. Families with older parents might reverse it: resort first to rest after the drive, houseboat second. If you're arriving from Munnar or Thekkady, a resort night first also lets you board the houseboat at noon without a dawn start.

How do you pick a houseboat?

Look for Kerala Tourism classification, a one-bedroom boat if you're a couple, an enclosed upper deck and clearly stated AC hours. Rates for two run about ₹8,000–12,000 for deluxe, ₹13,000–20,000 for premium and ₹25,000 and up for luxury, with meals, and climb sharply over Christmas and New Year.

Shared houseboats, where several couples book separate bedrooms on one boat, cut costs but mean sharing the deck and the menu. Fine for friends, less so for honeymooners.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to stay on a houseboat or in a resort in Alleppey?
Do both if you can. The houseboat is the reason to come, and one night on board gives you the full backwater experience. A lakeside or Marari resort is better for a second night, with a larger room, a pool and a proper shower. With only one night, choose the houseboat.
Is Marari better than Alleppey beach?
For a stay, yes. Marari is quieter, cleaner and lined with good resorts and homestays, while Alleppey beach is a busy town beach better for an evening walk. Neither is reliable for swimming, as currents are strong. Marari is about 12 km north of town, so it pairs easily with a houseboat.
Can you stay on a houseboat for two nights?
Yes, and operators will plan a longer route, but most travellers find one night enough. Boats must anchor by about 5:30 pm and often follow similar channels, so the second day can feel repetitive. If you want more backwater time, add a canoe trip or a night at a canal-side homestay instead.
