How to spend less without ruining the trip
- Travel in February, March or the first half of December for good weather without peak rates.
- Book a one-bedroom houseboat through a known operator; jetty deals often switch you to an older boat.
- Use one car and driver for the whole loop rather than separate transfers.
- Short on time and money? Drop Thekkady; it saves a hotel night and a long drive.
- Consider July to September for Ayurveda and the lowest rates, if you can accept daily rain.
- Adding beaches? Fly into Kochi and out of Thiruvananthapuram to avoid backtracking.
How much does a 5-night Kerala trip cost?
For two people sharing, the land part of the classic five-night loop of Fort Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady and an Alleppey houseboat runs from about ₹19,000 to ₹75,000 per person, depending on hotel class and season. Add return flights to Kochi. The tiers above are starting prices for October to March, excluding the Christmas–New Year fortnight.
What makes Kerala more or less expensive?
The houseboat is the biggest variable. A deluxe one-bedroom boat for two costs roughly ₹8,000–12,000 a night with meals, a premium boat ₹13,000–20,000 and a luxury boat ₹25,000 and up. Rates rise sharply from about 20 December to 2 January.
The car comes second. Kerala's sights are spread out, and almost every visitor uses a car with driver for the whole loop. A sedan for six days costs about ₹14,000–18,000 and an Innova-type SUV ₹17,000–24,000, including fuel, tolls and the driver's allowance.
Hotels in Munnar and Thekkady are good value outside peak weeks, but valley-view rooms and plantation resorts cost noticeably more than town hotels.
What does a day cost on the ground?
| Item | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Kerala meals at a local restaurant | ₹150–300 |
| Dinner for two, mid-range | ₹1,200–2,500 |
| Eravikulam entry, Indian adult | ₹125–200 |
| Kathakali show | ₹400–600 |
| Periyar boat ride | ₹300–500 |
| Ayurveda massage, 1 hour | ₹1,500–3,000 |
Is the monsoon cheaper?
Yes. From June to September many hotels and houseboats cut rates by 30–50%, and July is the traditional Ayurveda season. The trade-off is heavy rain, occasional road closures in the hills and fewer clear views.
Where is it worth spending more?
If you upgrade one thing, make it the houseboat: a premium boat with an enclosed upper deck and all-day AC makes the biggest difference to comfort. Next, pay for a valley-view room in Munnar. Hotels in Kochi and Thekkady matter less, since you'll spend most of your time out.
Ask whether a quote includes GST, the houseboat's meals and the driver's night allowance. These three items explain most of the gap between quotes that look similar.
