Our verdict

Choose Kerala for an easy domestic trip of backwaters, tea hills and Ayurveda, at about ₹28,000–35,000 per person for 5 nights with flights from Delhi. Choose Sri Lanka for a first short-haul international trip with safaris, ancient sites, whale watching and the Kandy–Ella train, at about ₹45,000–57,000 from Delhi. From Chennai, Bengaluru or Kochi, the gap narrows sharply.

Which one is for you?

Choose Kerala if…

  • You want backwaters and a houseboat, which Sri Lanka doesn't really offer
  • You're planning an Ayurveda programme of 7–14 days
  • Your group includes vegetarian or Jain travellers, or anyone without a passport
  • Your budget is under ₹35,000 per person including flights from North India

Choose Sri Lanka if…

  • You want leopard and elephant safaris at Yala or Udawalawe
  • Ancient sites such as Sigiriya and Dambulla interest you
  • You want a first international trip with a short flight from Chennai, Bengaluru or Kochi
  • You're travelling between May and September, when Sri Lanka's east coast is at its best

Similar on paper, different on the ground

Kerala and Sri Lanka share a climate, coconut-lined coasts, tea country and spicy rice-and-curry food. Sri Lanka packs more variety into a small island: Buddhist heritage, safari parks, a hill railway and two coasts with opposite monsoons. Kerala's strengths are the backwaters, Ayurveda and the ease of a domestic trip.

From Chennai, Bengaluru or Kochi, Colombo flights typically fall to ₹12,000–20,000 return, which brings Sri Lanka to about ₹37,000–45,000, close to a Kerala trip from Delhi. Entry fees at Sigiriya, Dambulla and the Temple of the Tooth are charged at foreigner rates, with SAARC discounts at some sites, so budget ₹5,000–8,000 per person for entries on a cultural loop. Visa

Indian passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before flying to Sri Lanka. The fee has been waived for Indians under a free-visa scheme in recent seasons, but the scheme is reviewed periodically, so confirm on the official ETA site or our Sri Lanka visa guide before booking.

Weather: Sri Lanka's two-coast advantage

Kerala is best from October to March; the June–August monsoon is very wet, though it suits Ayurveda. Sri Lanka's south-west monsoon (May to September) hits the west and south coasts, but the east coast around Trincomalee and Pasikudah is dry then, so there's usually a sunny coast somewhere. December to April is best for Galle, Mirissa and whale watching. See when to visit Sri Lanka.

What you get

A typical Sri Lanka loop covers Negombo or Colombo, Sigiriya and Dambulla, Kandy, the train from Kandy to Ella through tea country, a Yala or Udawalawe safari, then Galle and Mirissa. Many Indian travellers add Ramayana-linked sites such as the Seetha Amman temple near Nuwara Eliya. Kerala's loop is Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady and an Alleppey houseboat, with Varkala or Kovalam for the beach.

The honest trade-offs

Sri Lanka's roads are slow, with 100 km often taking three hours, and reserved seats on the Ella train sell out weeks ahead. Vegetarian food is manageable, but Jain meals need planning. Kerala's ghat roads are just as slow, and houseboat quality varies a lot.

Who should go where

Choose Kerala for Ayurveda, backwaters, older parents and tighter budgets. Choose Sri Lanka for wildlife, heritage and a first international trip, especially from South India.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sri Lanka cheaper than Kerala?
From Delhi, no: 5 nights in Kerala with flights cost about ₹28,000–35,000 per person against ₹45,000–57,000 for Sri Lanka. From Chennai, Bengaluru or Kochi, Colombo fares of ₹12,000–20,000 return bring Sri Lanka to roughly ₹37,000–45,000. On the ground, costs per day are similar, but Sri Lanka adds TCS and foreigner-rate entry fees.
Do Indians need a visa for Sri Lanka?
Indian passport holders need an online Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travel. In recent seasons, Sri Lanka has waived the ETA fee for Indians under a free-visa scheme, but it is reviewed periodically. Apply only through the official ETA website, carry a passport valid for six months and keep return tickets and hotel bookings handy.
Which is better for a honeymoon, Kerala or Sri Lanka?
Both work well. Kerala suits couples who want a private houseboat night, misty Munnar resorts and an Ayurvedic spa. Sri Lanka suits couples who want more variety in 6–7 nights: the Kandy–Ella train, a safari, and beach stays in Bentota, Mirissa or, from May to September, Pasikudah.
Is Sri Lanka good for vegetarian travellers?
Yes, mostly. Rice and curry meals include several vegetable curries and dal, and Indian restaurants are easy to find in Colombo and Kandy. Some dishes use Maldive fish flakes or fish stock, so ask clearly. Jain travellers should arrange meals through their tour operator, as onion and garlic are used widely.
When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka compared with Kerala?
Kerala is best from October to March. Sri Lanka's west and south coasts, including Galle and Mirissa, are best from December to April, while the east coast around Trincomalee is best from May to September. That makes Sri Lanka the better choice for a June or July beach trip.
