When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka has two monsoons hitting opposite sides of the island, so there is almost always a good coast somewhere. For the classic first trip — Colombo, Kandy, Sigiriya, Ella and the south coast — December to April is best. For the east coast (Trincomalee, Pasikudah, Arugam Bay), go between May and September.

How do the monsoons work?

MonthsDry sideWet side
December–AprilWest, south, hill countryNorth and east, early in the season
May–SeptemberEast coast, north, Cultural TriangleWest and south coasts
October–NovemberPatchy everywhereInter-monsoon storms island-wide

The south-west monsoon (roughly May to September) brings rain to Colombo, Galle and Bentota and rough seas on the south coast, where many beach shacks close. The north-east monsoon (roughly November to February) wets Trincomalee and Jaffna. October is often the wettest month island-wide. Rain usually arrives as afternoon or evening storms, so mornings are often usable even in the wetter months.

Is the hill country good all year?

Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella are pleasant year-round — 24–28°C by day in Kandy and cool nights in Nuwara Eliya, sometimes near 10°C in January. January to April gives the clearest views from the Kandy–Ella train and Adam's Peak.

When do Indian travellers usually go?

Travellers from Chennai, Bengaluru and Kochi often use long weekends, since flights are short and cheap. Peak Indian demand comes around Diwali, Christmas to New Year and the May–June holidays. May–June is low season on the south-west coast, so build a summer-holiday trip around Kandy, Sigiriya and the east coast instead.

Frequently asked questions

Which month is best for Sri Lanka?
February and March are the most reliable months for a classic route covering Kandy, Sigiriya, Ella and the south coast: dry, sunny and clear in the hills, with whale-watching season under way off Mirissa. January is equally good but busier. For the east coast, July and August are best.
Is it worth visiting Sri Lanka during the monsoon?
Yes, if you pick the right side. In May to September, focus on the Cultural Triangle, the hill country and the east coast, which stay mostly dry. Avoid basing a monsoon trip on Galle, Mirissa or Bentota, where seas are rough and many beach businesses close.
When is the Kandy Esala Perahera?
It runs for about ten nights in July or August, ending on the Esala full moon, and dates are announced by the Temple of the Tooth each year. Kandy hotels sell out and prices can double, so book months ahead and buy seats along the route through a reliable agent.
When is whale watching season in Sri Lanka?
Off Mirissa on the south coast, the season runs from about November to April, with December to March the most reliable. Off Trincomalee on the east coast, the window is roughly May to October. Blue whale sightings are common in season but never guaranteed, and boats can be crowded.
