When is the best time to visit Bhutan?

March to May and October to November are the best seasons. Spring brings rhododendrons on the Dochula and Chele La passes and mild days of 17–23°C in Paro and Thimphu. Autumn has the clearest skies of the year, with views of the high Himalaya from the passes, and the Thimphu Tshechu. Both are peak periods, so hotels and Paro flights sell out early.

What are winter and the monsoon like in Bhutan?

December to February is cold but clear. Thimphu sees highs of 12–14°C and nights below freezing, and snow can briefly close Chele La or Dochula. Punakha, lower and warmer, is pleasant in winter, and black-necked cranes winter in the Phobjikha Valley from about November to February.

June to September is the monsoon. Valleys are green and quiet, but rain triggers landslides on the Phuentsholing–Thimphu highway, the Tiger's Nest trail turns slippery, and cloud can delay Paro flights. If you are driving in from Bagdogra, keep a spare day.

Does the season change the cost?

For Indian nationals, the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is ₹1,200 per person per night in every season. What rises in March–April and October–November is hotel rates and Paro airfares. Our Bhutan trip cost guide shows a full breakdown, the 6-day Bhutan itinerary works in any dry month, and things to do in Bhutan covers the main sights. Frequently asked questions

Which is the best month to visit Bhutan from India?
October and April are the best single months: clear or mild weather, festivals and good hiking conditions. March brings the Paro Tshechu and early rhododendrons, while November has the crispest mountain views. Book hotels and Paro flights six to eight weeks ahead for these months.
Is Bhutan worth visiting in the monsoon?
It can be, if you are flexible. June to September is green and uncrowded, but landslides can block roads for hours and cloud can hide the mountains. Flying into Paro avoids the worst road stretch; either way, carry rain gear and leave a spare day before your flight home.
Does it snow in Bhutan in winter?
Snow falls on high passes such as Chele La (3,988 m) and Dochula (3,100 m) between December and February, and Thimphu and Paro usually get light snow a few times each winter. Punakha, at about 1,250 m, rarely sees any and is the warmest stop on a standard itinerary.
Does the SDF change by season for Indian travellers?
No. Indian nationals pay ₹1,200 per person per night throughout the year; children aged 6–12 pay half and those five and under are exempt. The fee is paid along with your entry permit. Hotel rates and airfares, not the SDF, are what rise in peak months.
