Quick answer

October to March is the best time to visit Kerala. The backwaters are calm, the hills around Munnar are cool and green, and beaches like Varkala are swimmable. December and January are the busiest and priciest months. The monsoon (June to September) suits Ayurveda treatments and budget travellers, and August brings Onam and the snake-boat races.

When is the best time to visit Kerala?

October to March. After the south-west monsoon withdraws in late September, the state dries out steadily. By November the backwaters are calm, the hills are clear in the mornings and the beaches are swimmable. December and January are peak months, with Kochi and Alleppey hotels running full and houseboat rates at their highest.

Kerala gets two monsoons. The south-west monsoon (June–September) is the big one. The north-east monsoon brings thunderstorms in October and November, mostly in the late afternoon, which rarely spoil a trip.

What is Kerala like in each season?

SeasonMonthsWhat to expect
PeakDec–JanDry, 31°C on the coast, 10–12°C nights in Munnar, highest prices
PleasantOct–Nov, Feb–MarGood weather, better rates
HotApr–MayHumid coast; hills full of summer-holiday families
MonsoonJun–SepHeavy rain, lush, cheapest; Ayurveda season

Is the monsoon a good time to visit Kerala?

It depends on the trip. July is the Malayalam month of Karkidakam, traditionally the season for Ayurveda, and many centres run 7–14 day programmes then. Houseboats still sail and rates fall sharply. But landslides occasionally close hill roads to Munnar and Wayanad, beaches are unsafe, and you will spend some afternoons waiting out downpours. We usually suggest monsoon Kerala for repeat visitors, not first-timers.

Which festivals are worth timing a trip for?

Onam falls in the month of Chingam, between late August and mid-September; Thiruvonam was on 26 August in 2026. The Nehru Trophy snake-boat race on Punnamada Lake is usually held on a Saturday in August, and was on 22 August in 2026. Thrissur Pooram in April–May is one of India's biggest temple festivals.

If you're combining Munnar and the backwaters, February is the sweet spot: clear skies, no peak-season surcharge and cool nights in the hills.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best month to visit Kerala?
February is the best single month for most first-time visitors. It is dry across the state, Munnar nights are cool, the backwaters are calm, and prices are lower than in December and January. November is a close second, with fresh post-monsoon greenery and the start of the season, though you may get some late-afternoon thunderstorms.
Is Kerala worth visiting in the monsoon?
Yes, if you want Ayurveda, greenery and low prices rather than beaches. Hotel and houseboat rates can fall by half, and July is the traditional season for Ayurveda treatments. Expect heavy rain most days, rough seas, leeches on hill trails and occasional landslides on the Munnar and Wayanad roads. First-time visitors usually enjoy October to March more.
When is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race held?
The Nehru Trophy is usually held on a Saturday in August on Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha. The 2026 race was on 22 August. The organising society fixes the date a few months ahead, so check the official Nehru Trophy or Alappuzha district website before booking flights, and reserve hotels early because the town fills up.
Is Kerala crowded in December?
From about 20 December to the first days of January, yes. Houseboats in Alleppey, hotels in Munnar and Fort Kochi, and cabs all run at peak demand and rates, and the Munnar road sees long traffic queues. Early December and mid-January onwards are much calmer while keeping the same good weather.
