Quick answer

December to March is the best time to visit Puducherry (Pondicherry). Days are around 29–31°C, humidity is manageable and the sea breeze makes the Promenade pleasant. January is the coolest and busiest month. Avoid April to June, when highs reach 36–37°C, and November, the peak of the north-east monsoon, when heavy rain and occasional cyclones disrupt travel.

When is the best time to visit Pondicherry?

December to March. Puducherry is on the Coromandel coast, which gets most of its rain from the north-east monsoon between October and December, the reverse of Kerala and Goa. By mid-December the rains thin out, and January to March brings blue skies, highs around 29–31°C and comfortable evenings for walking the French Quarter.

Which months should you avoid?

  • November: The wettest month, often over 300 mm. Cyclones forming in the Bay of Bengal sometimes cross the coast near Puducherry; Cyclone Fengal caused severe flooding at the end of November 2024. Trips can work, but keep plans flexible.
  • May–June: Hot and humid. Highs of 36–37°C make midday sightseeing hard work, though sea breezes help in the evenings.

July to September is warm with some showers. It's a reasonable time for a short break from Chennai or Bengaluru, and hotel rates are lower.

How busy is Pondicherry at weekends?

Very. It's about a three-hour drive from Chennai, so the French Quarter and the Promenade fill up every Friday night, and hotel rates jump on Saturdays. On long weekends, heritage stays in White Town sell out weeks ahead. Plan a midweek visit if you can. Sunday evenings are the exception: the town empties quickly as weekend visitors drive home, and Monday to Thursday rates can be 20–30% lower.

MonthWhy go
JanuaryCoolest weather, International Yoga Festival (4–7 Jan), Pongal
FebruaryDry; Auroville's birthday bonfire on 28 Feb
MarchWarmer, quieter, good rates

DecemberChristmas Mass at the Basilica; peak rates

The Promenade (Goubert Avenue) is closed to vehicles in the evenings, which makes it the best place to be at sunset in any season.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pondicherry good to visit in December?
Late December is good: the north-east monsoon is usually easing, it is cooler, and Christmas in the French Quarter is atmospheric. Early December can still bring heavy rain and the tail of the cyclone season. Prices and crowds peak from about 22 December to 1 January, so book heritage stays early.
Which month has the fewest crowds in Pondicherry?
May, June and September are the quietest, mainly because of the heat and humidity. For fewer crowds with decent weather, choose a weekday in March. Whatever the month, Pondicherry is busiest from Friday evening to Sunday because of weekend visitors from Chennai and Bengaluru.
Does Pondicherry get cyclones?
Yes, occasionally. The cyclone season on India's east coast runs from about October to December, with November the riskiest month. Cyclone Thane in 2011 and Cyclone Fengal in 2024 both hit Puducherry hard. The weather office gives several days' warning, so watch forecasts and book refundable stays if travelling in November.
Is May too hot for Pondicherry?
It is very hot and humid, with highs of about 37°C. Walking the French Quarter at midday is uncomfortable, though early mornings and evenings on the Promenade are bearable thanks to the sea breeze. If May is your only option, plan indoor visits for the afternoon and choose a hotel with a pool.
