How does this itinerary flow?
Puducherry is about 150 km south of Chennai along the East Coast Road, so this plan breaks the drive at Mahabalipuram on the way down. Day two pairs Auroville, about 12 km north of town, with Paradise Beach to the south, and the last morning covers the Ashram and temples before the drive back.
Should you stay in the French Quarter?
For a short trip, yes. Staying in White Town lets you walk to the Promenade, cafés, the Ashram and the Basilica. Heritage hotels there cost more than modern hotels outside, but you save on autos and time. Beach resorts north of town suit a slower stay.
Can you do it without a car?
Mostly. The French Quarter is walkable, scooters (about ₹300–500 a day) work for Auroville and the beaches, and buses run from Chennai's Kilambakkam terminus. A car with driver from Chennai, roughly ₹6,000–9,000 for the round trip with stops, is easiest for families.
What does it cost?
Mid-range land costs start at about ₹10,000 per person on twin sharing, covering two nights in a heritage or 3★–4★ hotel with breakfast and a car with driver from Chennai.
Weekend rates in White Town jump sharply. Shift this itinerary to Monday–Wednesday and you'll pay less and find the streets quieter.
More planning: things to do in Pondicherry, where to stay in Pondicherry, what to eat in Pondicherry and the best time to visit.
