Quick answer

Three days in Munnar means two nights: drive up from Kochi on day one with waterfall stops, spend day two on Eravikulam National Park, the Tea Museum, Mattupetty and Top Station, and catch a Kolukkumalai sunrise or Lockhart Gap on day three before driving back. Mid-range land costs start at about ₹12,000 per person.

Day-by-day plan

  1. 1

    Day 1

    Kochi to Munnar

    • Morning: Leave Kochi by 8 am; the 110 km drive takes 4–5 hours with stops.

    • Afternoon: Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls, then a spice garden near Pallivasal before checking in.

    • Evening: A Kathakali or Kalaripayattu show near town.

    Stay: Munnar (Pallivasal or Chithirapuram)

  2. 2

    Day 2

    Tahr, tea and Top Station

    • Morning: The first slot at Eravikulam National Park, around 7:30–8 am, for Nilgiri tahr and views of Anamudi.

    • Afternoon: The Tea Museum at Nallathanni, then Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point and Kundala Lake on the way to Top Station.

    • Evening: Back to the hotel by dusk; a bonfire if your hotel offers one.

    Stay: Munnar

Top Station is often misty by afternoon. If it's clouded over, stop at Kundala and head back early.

  3. 3

    Day 3

    Sunrise and the drive back

    • Morning: A Kolukkumalai sunrise jeep from Suryanelli (4 am start), or a gentler morning at Lockhart Gap and a guided estate walk.

    • Afternoon: Check out after lunch and drive back towards Kochi.

    • Evening: Reach Kochi by early evening, or continue to Alleppey.

Book a flight after 7 pm, or spend the night in Kochi.

Is three days right for Munnar?

Three days and two nights is the sweet spot. Munnar's sights are spread along several hill roads, and mist often closes in by late morning, so you need early starts on two separate days to see the main viewpoints clearly. One night feels rushed after a 4–5 hour drive from Kochi.

How does this plan work?

Day one is mostly the drive, broken up by waterfalls and a spice garden. Day two packs Munnar's best-known sights along the Rajamala and Mattupetty roads. Day three is flexible: the Kolukkumalai sunrise jeep for those who want an early adventure, or a gentle estate walk for families and older travellers.

What if Eravikulam is closed?

The park usually closes from about 1 February to 31 March for Nilgiri tahr calving. Swap day two's morning for the Kolukkumalai sunrise, and move Lockhart Gap and an estate walk to day three.

What does it cost?

Mid-range land costs start at about ₹12,000 per person on twin sharing, with a 3★–4★ hotel and breakfast for two nights, a car with driver from Kochi, and entry fees.

Hire one car and driver for all three days, about ₹3,000–4,000 a day from Kochi including fuel. It's simpler than local taxis, and the driver knows where to park at each stop.

Plan with things to do in Munnar, where to stay in Munnar and the best time to visit Munnar. Continuing to the backwaters? Add a night in Alleppey.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Munnar as a day trip from Kochi?
Technically yes, but we don't recommend it. The round trip is 8–10 hours of driving on winding roads, leaving only two or three hours in Munnar, often after the mist has rolled in. If you have just one day, a backwater trip from Kochi to Alleppey is far more relaxing.
Is Munnar good for a honeymoon?
Yes. Cool weather, tea-estate views and quiet resorts make it one of Kerala's most popular honeymoon stops. Choose a valley-view room in Chithirapuram, Pallivasal or Chinnakanal rather than the town centre, and pair two nights in Munnar with an Alleppey houseboat for a classic Kerala honeymoon.
Where should I stay for this itinerary?
Pallivasal or Chithirapuram, 10–20 minutes before Munnar town on the Kochi road, are ideal: valley views, a range of mid-range resorts and easy access to the Rajamala and Mattupetty roads. Chinnakanal is quieter and closer to Kolukkumalai, but adds driving to Eravikulam.
