Quick answer

For most visitors, Chithirapuram and Pallivasal are the best areas to stay in Munnar: valley views, good mid-range resorts and easy access to Eravikulam and Mattupetty. Munnar town suits budget travellers without a car, Pothamedu offers views close to town, Chinnakanal and Suryanelli suit couples wanting quiet and Kolukkumalai sunrises, and Anachal offers cheaper plantation stays.

Which area of Munnar is best?

It depends on what you want to do. Munnar is a small town set in a large tea landscape, and most of the better stays are outside town along the approach roads. Distances look short on a map but take time on winding roads, so pick a base close to the sights you care about.

Hotel, resort or plantation bungalow?

Large resorts dominate the Pallivasal and Chithirapuram slopes and suit families who want restaurants and activities on site. Old planters' bungalows and homestays have more character, often with estate walks included, but fewer facilities. For December–January and April–May, book at least four to six weeks ahead.

What should you check before booking?

  • Heating: nights drop to around 10°C in winter, so ask for a room heater.
  • Access road: some resorts are reached by steep, single-lane tracks.
  • View: valley-view and tea-garden-view rooms usually cost ₹1,000–2,500 more a night, and are worth it.
  • Parking: many town hotels have little or none, which matters on busy weekends.

If you're arriving after dark, choose a stay on the Kochi side of town. The Gap Road and estate roads are poorly lit, and elephants sometimes cross at night around Chinnakanal.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stay in Munnar town or outside it?
Outside, if you have a car. Pallivasal, Chithirapuram and Pothamedu give you valley views and quiet for a similar price to a town hotel, and are only 10–20 minutes from the centre. Munnar town makes sense only on a tight budget, if you're relying on buses, or for a single night in transit.
How far ahead should I book Munnar hotels?
Four to six weeks ahead for December–January, the April–May school holidays, Onam and long weekends; good valley-view rooms go first. Two to three weeks is usually enough the rest of the year. In the monsoon you can often book a few days ahead and negotiate a better rate.
Are Munnar resorts suitable for elderly parents?
Many are, but check two things. First, the approach road: some resorts sit on steep, narrow tracks. Second, the room layout: hillside properties often have long staircases between the lobby, restaurant and cottages. Ask for a ground-floor room near the restaurant, or choose a resort with lifts or buggy service.
