Quick answer
Fatehabad Road is the best base for most visitors: 1–3 km from the Taj's East Gate, with chain hotels at every price and easy parking. Budget travellers who want to walk to the Taj at dawn should choose Taj Ganj. For a special occasion, the luxury hotels near the East Gate offer Taj views from the room, at a steep price.

Where should you stay in Agra?
For most travellers, Fatehabad Road is the best base. It is 1–3 km from the Taj's East Gate, has the widest choice of chain hotels at every price, and is easy to reach by car. Budget travellers who want to walk to the Taj at dawn should look at Taj Ganj. For a special occasion, the luxury hotels by the East Gate are the only places where you can see the Taj from bed.
Why location matters more in Agra
The Taj opens about 30 minutes before sunrise, and the best light lasts less than an hour. Vehicles are stopped about a kilometre from the gates, so you drive to the parking area, then walk or take the battery bus. From Fatehabad Road that takes 10–15 minutes; from Agra Cantt, 25–30. On a foggy winter morning, every minute counts.
One night or two?
One night is enough for the Taj at sunrise and Agra Fort. Two nights make sense in December and January, when fog can wipe out a sunrise, or if you want to see Fatehpur Sikri without rushing.
Taj Ganj's rooftop restaurants sell the 'Taj view' hard. The view is real but distant, and food quality varies, so check recent reviews.
