How long do you need in Agra?
One full day and one night is enough for most visitors: the Taj Mahal at sunrise, Agra Fort after breakfast, and the east-bank monuments with Mehtab Bagh for sunset. Add a second morning for Fatehpur Sikri, 37 km away on the Jaipur road. Day trips from Delhi work by Gatimaan Express or the Yamuna Expressway, but you will see the Taj in harsh midday light with the biggest crowds.
Getting the Taj right
- Go at opening time, about 30 minutes before sunrise. The East Gate queue is usually shortest.
- Buy tickets on the ASI portal. The ₹200 mausoleum add-on is worth it on a first visit.
- Food, tobacco, tripods and chargers are not allowed. Lockers are at the gates.
- Vehicles are kept about a kilometre from the gates; battery buses and golf carts run from the parking areas.
- Fridays: closed.
Touts and commissions
Agra has more touts than most Indian cities. Expect unlicensed guides at the gates, rickshaw drivers who offer a ₹50 'city tour' that ends in a marble shop, and fake ticket sellers. Buy only at official counters or online, and use approved guides, who carry ID.
Tuesday to Thursday is the calmest time at the Taj. Saturdays, Sundays and long weekends bring very large crowds from Delhi.
Plan the rest
Check the best time to visit Agra for fog and heat, and compare Taj Ganj with Fatehabad Road in where to stay in Agra. Agra is the middle leg of the Golden Triangle: continue to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri, or head back to Delhi.
