Quick answer

October to March is the best time for a Golden Triangle trip. Delhi, Agra and Jaipur are all 22–30 °C by day, and February–March has the clearest air and the most reliable Taj Mahal sunrises. November to January is cooler but brings smog and fog that can delay trains and blur the Taj. Avoid May and June, when all three cities cross 40 °C.

When is the best time to do the Golden Triangle?

October to March. The circuit of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur covers roughly 750 km of driving in a loop across the plains, so the weather tells the same story in all three cities: a hot summer, a humid monsoon and a mild winter. The table here uses Agra; Delhi is similar and Jaipur is usually a degree or two warmer by day.

Which part of winter?

October and early November. Warm, clear days after the monsoon. Diwali falls on 8 November in 2026, which makes Jaipur's bazaars spectacular but also fills hotels.

Mid-November to January. Peak season, but this is when Delhi's smog and the north Indian fog belt are at their worst. Morning flights and trains, including the Gatimaan and Shatabdi services, can run hours late, and a fogged-in Taj sunrise is common in late December and January. Build in a buffer day.

February to mid-March. The best weeks. The air is cleaner, sunrises at the Taj are reliable, Taj Mahotsav runs from 18 to 27 February and Holi arrives in March.

Months to avoid

May and June bring 40–45 °C in all three cities. You can still do the circuit with an air-conditioned car and dawn starts, but the Taj's marble and Amber Fort's ramparts are punishing by noon. July to September is humid with heavy downpours; prices drop, and it suits travellers who have seen the circuit before and want fewer crowds.

Plan around closures: the Taj Mahal is shut on Fridays, and the Red Fort, Akshardham and the Lotus Temple in Delhi on Mondays. A route that puts you in Agra on a Friday wastes a day.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month for a Golden Triangle tour?
February is the best single month. Days are 24–27 °C, the air is cleaner than in early winter, and the Taj Mahal's sunrise is rarely lost to fog. October and March are close behind. November to January is pleasant for temperature but carries a real risk of smog in Delhi and fog delays on morning trains.
Can you do the Golden Triangle in summer?
It is possible but hard going. From May to mid-June all three cities reach 40–45 °C. If you must go, use an air-conditioned car, visit monuments at opening time, rest from noon to 4 pm and choose hotels with pools. Senior citizens and young children are better off waiting for October.
Does fog affect Golden Triangle trains?
Yes. From mid-December to late January, dense fog often delays trains between Delhi, Agra and Jaipur by one to several hours, and some services are cancelled on the worst days. Driving on the Yamuna Expressway also slows down. Keep the first day's plans light and avoid tight train-to-flight connections.
Which day should I avoid in Agra?
Friday. The Taj Mahal is closed to visitors every Friday. Plan the route so you reach Agra on any other day, ideally staying overnight so you can see the Taj at sunrise. Delhi's Red Fort, Akshardham and the Lotus Temple close on Mondays, so a Monday is better spent in Agra or Jaipur.
